It's funny thinking back to the post-Romney loss in 2012 and how completely fucked the party was. Republicans did a post election autopsy some of which was insightful.
He tried to coup the government? Don't care, he told me groceries would be cheaper. He's a rapist? Don't care, he going to deport illegal immigrants and build the wall. Wants to be "dictator for a day"? Don't care, he's going to hold China's feet to the fire.
Trump forcefully took over the GOP robot, used it for his own purposes and they both benefited massively. The republicans got to avoid their moment of truth because Trump saw weakness, invaded and pillaged the whole damn thing. Now they just need to take orders and shut up. Self reflection is for losers when Daddy Trump tells us what to do!
Point being, the Republicans were a vulnerable mess, but democrats aren't much better off. What has the party been post-McGovern? What do they stand for? Clinton managed to temporarily save the party after Reagan going Third Way. Let's be honest, Clinton was a likable guy, too. Obama, also very charismatic, temporarily saved the party after Bush. They can't replicate him again and it's not a viable strategy to just wait for the next Obama. They should have THEIR moment of reflection in 2020 but kicked the can down the road when Biden won the primary. They wanted to run it back one more time. Unfortunately, the electorate doesn't like how you run things. You've been admonished TWICE. I can't believe this happened again after HillDawg ate shit so spectacularly.
I don't know where the party goes now. Their messaging needs to totally change. People vote on vibes and culture war bullshit and who was on Joe Rogan recently. Democrats need fresh leaders with a better understanding of working class and young people. Trump is a con-man and will just lie to get what he wants. He's writing the rule book for whoever takes over the GOP when he's gone. How do you counter this?
Quote:“The perception, revealed in polling, that the GOP does not care about people is doing great harm to the Party and its candidates on the federal level, especially in presidential years. It is a major deficiency that must be addressed,” the report reads. In a lot of ways, Trump rectified this and it won him the Rust belt twice. If not for covid, I think he would have won in 2020 too. I mean, he has zero meaningful plans or policies. He told people what they wanted to hear, told them everything would get better but did so in a colorful (I mean, he sounds like a moron) and entertaining way and the crowds ATE IT UP.
