As well as protecting your ears it filters out all the crap frequencies and makes the music sound better.
Agree on the first part, but disagree somewhat on the second.
I mostly watch metal gigs and I have decent earplugs. They tend to filter out the mids so, depending on the band, I often hear a lot of bass and not much guitar.
