Maverick went from an unorthodox pilot with an attitude problem to a super hero. Completely shit all over the legacy of the original film. 

Random fuelled up F-14 just sitting next to the runway was the point where I almost walked out.

That is an entirely canon reference, the Iranian airforce has a single operational F-14 tomcat that they use for combat patrols.

But it wasn't Iran...apparently.
