You were such a lucky kid. I grew up in the Carter economy. We were too busy waiting in lines for fuel to go into a restaurant that sold appetizers. Thank heavens Jim Craig and the Gipper were there to save us. 1981 took us from Spam and Tab to eating at Steak and Ale.

Carter was the one who appointed Volcker to break inflation, Carter was the one who ended price controls on gasoline/oil, and Carter did far more deregulation over four years than Reagan did over eight.

Ironically, Carter was a prickly social conservative who didn't know how to delegate. Carter probably is one of the smarter presidents but unlike say, Clinton (who is probably top tier ever), he had no people skills and was somewhat of a loner who only trusted himself.
