Belgian festival cancels screening of film on trans Gazan after Israel ‘pinkwashing’ claims

The film, “The Belle from Gaza,” by French director Yolande Zauberman, is not Israeli. It tells of a transgender woman who flees the Strip and relocates to Tel Aviv, and of her life in the community there.

An international film festival in Belgium announced on Wednesday that it was cancelling the screening of the documentary film "The Belle from Gaza," under pressure from pro-Palestinian activists. The French documentary film follows a young Palestinian transgender woman who flees Gaza on foot after her life was threatened because of her gender identity, and arrives in Tel Aviv to live freely and formulate her identity.
Although the film is not Israeli and was filmed before October 7, 2023, the festival officially announced that it decided to cancel the screening, because the film "contributes to the pink-washing and colonialist narrative of genocide by Israel."

Cinemamed's official announcement states that the decision is unprecedented and that this is the first time that they were forced to cancel the screening of a film. "We apologize that viewers were unable to hear the reason for our decision to cancel the screening or form an independent opinion about the film. The decision was made out of respect for the audience and teams who are presenting their works at the festival."

"The Belle of Gaza" does portrays Palestinian society in a negative light, as a society that does not accept the LBGTQ community, to put it mildly. The film's French director, Yolande Zauberman commented on this in an interview with Haaretz Hebrew in June, saying, "I didn't make this film to show that Israel treats trans people better, but that is a fact."
