I need to be honest, this thread is just gross as hell and people should be ashamed of themselves. We're literally in this thread arguing that body shaming is ok, so long as it's done from the left, as long as it's punching up. Never mind that the whole point of being against body shaming is that when we throw those barbs at the people we hate, we inadvertently tell our allies and friends that we don't actually give a shit about them or their problems.

I have a medical condition that requires me to take medication that thins out my hair. I've been on said medication since I was 21. When I first found out, I kinda freaked out. Imagine being a 21 and looking in the mirror and all of a sudden you're not really you anymore. It took a long fucking time to come to terms with the fact that my options were literally keep my hair or just straight up bleed to death. Even now it's a bit of a sore spot for me, not because I'm bothered by the thinned out hair, but because it's just a reminder that I had to give up a huge part of my future as a result of my condition.

I say all this to say this: you don't know what someone else is going through. You don't know what might be the straw the breaks the camels' back. Arguing that it's perfectly fine to shame people for their appearance because you're doing it from the left or punching up or whatever justification you come up with misses the point of being against body shaming entirely. It's about not being an asshole. It's about understanding that everyone has their own struggles and shit they are going through and that what we say can affect the people around us, even if we don't mean for it to do so.

It's about understanding that your off-hand comment that you didn't aim at someone, well, it might just ruin their day at best.

I also return to the belief that mockery is not just cathartic and an art in some respects, but can also reinforce the struggles and temper sensitivity in those who are oppressed and are inherently part of these cultures. People keep insisting on this truism that jokes aimed at a person's appearance hurt everyone in the crossfire, but is that really true when minorities make fun of each other all the time in ways that directly target their own endemic features? Step into a Black elementary school and you will hear Black children going the fuck in on someone's darkness or lightness in skin color, their hair texture, their height (whether they're tall or short!); nothing is off limits. This level of humor and wit is then turned right back around against the culture that oppresses us, or even becomes part of said culture.
