Nepenthe just days ago argued that her making fun of small dicked, bald-headed losers is fine. She believed so strongly in that she should be able to make fun of a person's physical traits that she used an alt--or used her friend by proxy--to attack ERA and its users and even B-Dumbs himself. Now she's in that Brazilian jokes thread saying bigoted speech is deserving of prison time.

Does she now think she should get prison time for making fun of people's physical differences? Of course, she will argue that "it's not the same" but what's the difference between someone making fun of a minority due to skin color and someone like her making fun of someone because of their physical condition. Both are a person's born, immutable trait.

I imagine women being attracted to taller men is pretty primal (wanting to feel safe and protected), much like how men are attracted to big boobs and wide hips (child bearing). In modern society those traits aren't as important, but that shit is hard wired. Honest question, this is not a rhetorical move or something—would you say that Brazil is more or less racist since enacting these laws? If it is more racist, why do you suppose the law has not been successful at changing Brazilian people's attitudes? If it is less racist, do you feel that this law has been responsible for this, or is it something else?

The "comedian" in particular is a right wing lunatic who not only surfed the fascist wave in this country, he and his buddies are repeat offenders on this type of stuff, one time or another this would happen, I'm actually glad to see the law being used, because condemnations as these are rare, I remember that when I was doing my graduation thesis I had a single case of something like this happening and it was a dude who literally published a book with anti-semitic connotations, it was unheard of at the time for racism against black people, let alone homophobia being tried as this.

No right is absolute, especially when it infringes on other rights, for a society to work limits need to be estabilished, if you allow someone to constantly berate, harass and humiliate those whose "crimes" are just existing.

Free speech is supposed to defend you against government action, not give you card blanche to go around disseminating hateful ideologies, In Brasilian law we value (or at least we should this country is very flawed and by no means beautiful, those who are in the trenches know it) Dignity over some vain notion of freedom, after all you can't have dignity without freedom but you can totally be free to do some unsavory and harmful things, or even worse you can be coerced into awful acts and have that be masked as "freedom".

If anyone wants to know details about either the case or Brasilian law, I am here and will try to answer on the best of my ability.

I think a lot of our obsession with free speech comes from our indoctrination of the American story and not because there is some greater truth or reason for it.
