Hide tags, like quotes and staff post and all the rest, are a bb-code thing and don't actually affect the site itself. Something like what is suggested might be possible, but would take an inordinate amount of development time to accomplish. Trust me, I've asked about something along these lines before.
Beyond that, someone in either this thread or another said something that stuck in my head and got me thinking: how we handle new game releases goes against the whole "new news, new thread" rule and builds a culture of not doing that. In addition, it is also a pain in the butt on our end.
The way we handle new game releases is for a single reason: to stop the main page of the gaming forum from getting overtaken by a single popular release. We don't want a single game to make it so nobody can see any other discussion and as a result we lock all sorts of interesting threads about these games and funnel them into the OT. We can all agree that this is not great. It stinks for people looking to discuss story stuff, it stinks for people in the OT looking to talk about the game itself, it stinks for people looking to discuss stuff outside of the game.
This is when we had a thought: why not use the embedded subforum system to solve this issue on a technical level?
The proposal is as follows: we create a "New Releases" subforum that will house all threads on brand-new releases. So, say the new Bond game comes out and it's a smash and everyone has a million things to say. Instead of pushing it all into a single OT, we put it all into the subforum. The OT will still exist, but it will largely be for people actively playing the game. Threads about story beats, themes, technical stuff, impressions, and all the rest of the sort of threads that normally get locked would now be allowed, they'd just be in the "New Releases" subforum. We would no longer have to police thread creation when a new game comes out because if people don't want to see those threads, they can just click a single button and make them all go away as they browse.
If we were to do this, people would have far more freedom to make threads to talk about specific things instead of clogging up the OT with everything under the sun and the people who don't want to see those threads can just rid of them if they so choose. Beyond that, it would free us up to handle actual pressing issues instead of just having to police thread creation to keep the main page from getting overcrowded.
We can also potentially mandate the usage of prefixes and add some new ones for that subforum only, to better allow people to filter and see the threads they are interested in.
So, listening to people's complaints about stuff, I think we have found a technical solution to a problem that has kind of bugged everyone, including all of us, for a while now. I bring it up in here to see what everyone thinks before we start moving forward with anything.
Oh no that's horrible
But of course acceptance is not part of the community they fostered so here is the first response

It's always felt a bit strange to have momentum and buzz killed in such a way but this definitely seems like a win/win situation for all sides. I'm commenting on this specifically because I want to stress that while I had a post a few days ago that was critical of some elements of subforms and the steps required to ignore them versus larger structural changes, I do still think the move to subforums is better than not having them at all. I may not have made that clear in my previous post but I wanted to do so here. In particular this one would solve multiple issues with one solution. I like it, personally.
I am curious about the specific details of how it would work. For one, how long would a game be considered a "new release"? Once that period is up would all the threads in question be moved out of the New Release section into the main section? If they are, that's a rather tedious job for staff. But if they aren't, what happens when a thread remains in use or someone has an update to it after the game's New Release period? Would it become a faux pas to bump or use a thread after it's time in the section is up? I think as long as those things are ironed out beforehand in a way that everyone is cool with there shouldn't really be any issues. Especially if the mentioned tags are implemented to help people further filter out specific games when multiple big releases happen at once (which is the only thing I can imagine some complaining about).
Also, I hope this doesn't come across as condescending or weird to comment on because I don't mean it that way (but I think it's important to express praise equally as criticism when either is warranted)... I've noticed recently a push from you to bring up these sorts of potential changes in here and ask for user feedback on them. The last one caused a debate and in the end a compromise was found and this one seems like it'll probably be well liked with little issue. Both of those outcomes are a success and across the board I think it's an approach that a lot of people probably appreciate and in my personal opinion is a solution to some of the friction that may have arisen from changes in the past. Good stuff.
Reactions to playing the game/random thoughts would still be the territory of the OT, I imagine. Or at least threads all talking about the same type of things would be considered duplicates. I think this is more for when there's specific things about the game that justify having their own thread where people would want to talk specifically about that thing without it getting drowned out in a sea of other conversations within the OT.

It's funny how similar he looks to Michael compared to his... children. Did anyone ever tell the full story on that?

Yeah, it's not like it's a tweet referencing a game by an employee that the company fired over it. That's the kind of thing actually worth condemning and punishing a company of hundreds of people and their game over. (My changing my console location and new game plus is on a gifted copy for my trusted evaluation of its sinful elements.)

an endless spiral of categories to drill down into is cancer, nobody wants to do infinite nested clicks to get to one simple topic
it's why gaf did so well and partly why reddit does so well
most people feel like creating a new thread is being an imposition or demanding too much attention for your insignificant little question, let people pop into a megathread, drop their comment or question, and be done with it

People bitched about James Bond even before he become a film icon.

I mean, Alan Moore made him evil and incompetent in his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comics.
He also made Harry Potter the anti christ (way before the Trans backlash against Rowling).
Moore is a total boss. He could have been super rich. Instead he told Hollywood to get fucked.

Quote: As a baby, the Antichrist (who is heavily implied to be Harry Potter but never referred to by name) was scarred with the mark of the beast on his forehead, and throughout the child's adolescence, Oliver Haddo tried to manipulate him into accepting his destiny by staging a series of adventures set in the school and portraying a nemesis for him to fight. The revelation of his true destiny drove the Antichrist insane and he went on a destructive rampage, destroying the school and killing all the staff and pupils.
Quote: The Antichrist is unaffected by the blast and shoots a bolt of magical lightning from his penis, which kills Allan. An enigmatic woman resembling Mary Poppins descends from the sky and destroys the Antichrist by transforming him into a chalk drawing on the road, which washes away in the rain.
