Just asking you guys for some luck to come my way because I got terminated from a job last Friday. I am currently waiting to hear back from another employer to see if I get an offer and tomorrow is likely the day of that news.

I don't want to spare too many details, but essentially, tomorrows direction likely decides the direction of my life in general so... it's kinda big. It's not just about the potential job, it's more than that.

So please, send good vibes and good luck.

Why was I fired? Absolutely BS reasons. I was working there for only 2 months and was repeatedly told that they love the way I've been training and glad that I've been picking up on things as well as I did.

But I've been trying to leave because it is the most toxic work environment I've ever been around. The most openly racist, sexist, homophobic and crass team I have ever been apart of. If you can imagine it, IT HAPPENED. Believe me. I heard and saw things I've never seen before in a professional work environment.

I once had to take a week off because I had covid. That's all the time I ever took off. It was unpaid as I had no PTO as well, so it sucked. I'm sure that was a contributor to their ire even though I was following company policy.

But since I needed to interview elsewhere, I took half a day off when I had no PTO and even offered to come into work asap. Boss was very angry about that. I claimed I had a family emergency I could not abandon. Next day I come in, they fired me.

So here I am, waiting to hear back from the other employer as to whether I got the job. I actually have a history of over 5 years of working at that employer and have a good reputation so my chances are good at landing the job and landing on my feet BUT, anything could happen and if they don't hire me, I'm really out here on my own in the rat race.

I'm removing your bolds solely for this.  Why stay for two months when you witnessed this?

I don't think you are allowed to fire someone on that basis? I'm in the UK though, US seems like they can fire you if their horoscopes recomended it that morning.

They absolutely can, and yes, essentially every state in the US can have employers fire you for simply looking at them the wrong way or wearing something they didn't like.


People try to justify this by saying the opposite works too since you can quit any given moment without any repercussions, but typically it's abused far, far more on the employer's side than the employees. Personally speaking, I've only seen an employee fuck off when work conditions were in dire straights and they were clearly being disrespected or given an impossible task.

Wait, do they think that people in other countries can't quit their jobs? Canada has a two-week notice period, but that just means that you can announce you're quitting up to two weeks before your end date without your employer retaliating by firing you early. That doesn't go the other way around, nothing legally stops you from walking.

It's very lopsided and employers still try to demonize any on-the-spot walk offs by saying you must provide notice in advance or face consequences which you don't with at-will employment. I'm sure there's plenty of idiots that think you're locked in no matter what in other countries, but I don't believe that train of thought is heavily prevalent.

Public perception has you believing that employers being able to fire you at a moments notice for any reason at all is perfectly balanced because an employee also has the same right to just leave at a moment's notice without any reason.

You see the cracks though when employers want their cake and to eat it too by demanding employees provide adequate notice whereas they wouldn't themselves. Employees also face potential repercussions for doing so by "burning bridges" whereas an employer doesn't really face any consequences for firing someone at the drop of a hat.

Various states have some at-will employment protections versus others, but it ultimately doesn't amount to much when you still have to proceed with legal action that most either can't afford or simply don't have the time for.

If the boss suspected that you were lying about the half-day, then they would naturally assume that you were also lying about having COVID. Even just skipping work just once without approval from your boss is risky, but multiple times when you've only been there a couple months? Yeah, you're getting fired.

Again, I was following company policy for covid, they told me to do that. So the half day was the only time I willingly asked not to come in.

No warning, no disciplinary action, straight to termination after taking a half day?

I don't know why you would think you'd get just a slap on the wrist when you got your boss mad at you for refusing to come into work when you were supposed to be working. That's textbook cause to fire somebody, especially a new employee. And it's not like your motives were pure - you lied about what you were doing, because you were skipping work so you could interview for a different job. If you wanted to keep your job, you should have been apologizing profusely the second you walked back through that door, although even then, the damage was probably already done.

It sucks to be out of work and I hope you find a job at a place you enjoy soon.

I mean you did lie to your boss, and pulling the family emergency card when there isn't one is kind of shitty. Whether they knew you were lying or not I wouldn't call it bullshit reasons.

I'm all for workers but you lied to get out of work so you can't say it's not deserved.

And another point to take is you probably weren't as slick or convincing about the lie as you thought you were and it could have been obvious you were lying. Hell if you were any good at lying you wouldn't post about it openly here. That's just stupid.

The rationale to saying the reason you got fired is BS should not be "you should be able to lie to get out of work and they should be fine with it"

Especially when you're likely still on probation. You've got only 2 months in, at best it is 40 days. You've taken 5 for "Covid" (why not just lie about it while you're at it?) and then another day is like 15% of your entire working time.

Plus who knows what is going on that day you called out and what was going on when you were out on Covid. Most places would not keep you, if you found somewhere that did, you would be lucky.
