I think the actual reason is that Americans mostly only are taught about the sins of the English colonists and nothing anybody else in the world did. Back when I was in college, and so was much of Era probably, there was this constant jabbering teachers pet type who wore Civil War jackets that was telling us this in some stupid group activity and how the English were the worst New World imperialists by far and I laughed and he looked at me like I had laughed in Church at the minister. And I mentioned a couple things the Spanish did to the Aztecs and he just stared like it wasn't even computing or maybe that I was making it up or something.

To be fair, his being really annoying had a lot to do with it. And also why I'm telling this irrelevant story as if it's actual evidence of my point. I hope his egg cracked by now.

The American "left" is largely blind to their own form of American exceptionalism where the negative things in American history are unique and exclusive to American history. There's a similar thing across the West. All of it to be judged from modern ideal standards. With the rest of the world being a pristine land of progressively spiritual and tolerant natives who only and ever lived as Disney might depict.

They need this to be the case because they don't have an argument within their ideological framework for why if those cultures were just as shit or worse that violating their sovereignty and improving them isn't morally correct. Look at how often and reflexively Era posters demand "the world" use war to forcibly reeducate the population of some place. (Or the state do it to their own population.)
