In many ways, it was because he was made into a poster boy of black excellence, and the racist traditional and social media viewed this as an opportunity to attack ethnic minority involvement in academia.

Regardless of Arday's personal actions - which do seem to have been dishonest, and leveraging a rather fictitious personal narrative for career advancement - it is being used as a piece of ammunition to attack ethnic minorities more broadly in a completely dishonest way. Having a PhD myself and several family members in academia, as well as supervisors / colleagues, etc., who were ethnic minorities...my experience is that pretty much everybody has to work incredibly hard to make it within academia, and those that progress most, as in other fields of life, are not just the most talented, capable...they are the ones who can play the game best in an increasingly corporate university setting that isn't always particularly compatible with taking more ethical stances.

Seriously, why even entertain the idea of “the plagiarist could got away with it if he was white” Awesome and announced it like lamenting that minorities are not allowed to degrade themselves like the whites. Mindblown

“He was bullied because he was black excellence… thought it was clear it wasn’t and he got away because lowering standards… anyway, corpo colleges are at fault. Six (even if this is a mistake that a corpo would will make on itself).”

Fucking ERA, they grave dance for people that did even less than this guy, but because he was an outspoken activist and right wingers are the ones doing the grave dancing, he suddenly is a “imperfect” martyr.

I feel for the dude to an extent, but is insane that his family is continuing the charade.

Anyway the Jason Arday stuff seems fairly split between people who are rightly sympathetic because they've been in the system and people who don't know anything about the system and want the culture fight

Nobody deserves to be bullied into suicide because they went one or two tokes over the line with the stories, as for the plagiarism it literally doesn't matter at all if they all decided he was a genius anyway imo. He wouldn't have got the job if if weren't for culture forces but also his entire field was horse shit but is that his fault in anyway? Not at all. He found a gap and became the guy they wanted, its literally not a crime. Sad.

Alan Lester, professor of historical geography at the University of Sussex, added that "this case now provides the far-right racists who condemn any equalities and diversity initiatives with a weapon that they will wield egregiously".[94] Similarly, Paul Sagar, a political theorist at King's College London, noted that the populist Right would use the incident to further their criticism of the humanities and social sciences. Sagar described Arday as "a fraudster[,...] plagiarist, and [...] a serial fantasist" with an "obviously paper-thin" research record, and criticised both Arday and Cambridge University for being prepared to "shamelessly play the race card when anybody tries to question the very obvious holes in his story."[66]

The journalist and author Nesrine Malik told The Guardian that it was hard "not to feel this [incident] is about all of us" Black people, resulting in feeling that Black people were likely to be seen as exaggerating their credentials, or that Black people had been given preferential treatment and used by liberal institutions to seem more diverse.[73]

Every time you call out these anti-Black devs for their blatant racism, the remaining playerbase of this shit game will come to their defense even though this has been a repeated pattern with every single Black character in the game since the beginning. Still laughing at the Egyptian battlepass.

Why I stopped playing it. Well that and them being completely incapable of balancing their game. Shame because anybody other than Netease would've done a much better job.

Old School Gamer wrote:Netease ain't going to make more Storm skins if nobody buys them. Stop being performative.
Case in point. There's the argument certain people always revert to. How can people buy skins when they literally have given Storm next to NOTHING throughout the entire lifecycle of the game.

Performative? No, it just makes you uncomfortable to actually acknowledge how these racist developers have done every single Black character in this game.
Quote:Nah these devs are racist as hell. It's obvious. Anyone trying to justify this is ignorant at best. Every single female character that had a summer skins released this year was a legendary. The disco skins, Egypt skins...it's obvious Netease is racist as hell.
Nepenthe wrote:It's amazing how Marvel Rivals is basically speedrunning through every single issue Overwatch has had with no attempt at avoiding or addressing these issues. Inspiring, really.
Nepenthe wrote:
Old School Gamer wrote:You totally missed the point. That wasn't what I was saying. They're releasing all 6 summer skins in the same week. People are going have to pick and choose only 1-2 skins. Storm is definitely going to be overshadowed regardless of what rarity she is. Her being an Epic makes her a more likely 2nd bundle pick up. The way it is now, she's going to have low sales regardless. Ideally, she should've been released during a seperate shop week.
Why is Storm going to be overshadowed?
Nepenthe wrote:
Old School Gamer wrote:Storm's releasing in the shop alongside Magik and Scarlet Witch Legendaries swimsuits. A event pass with a Black Cat Legendary swimsuit. Tell me realistically, who are the masses/casuals going to pick up. Bare in mind, you can only pick 1/2 from those choices.
This doesn't answer the question. Why is Storm being overshadowed by these characters?
Nepenthe wrote:
Quote:Bottom line is that NetEase and Marvel are in the business to make money, and have the data to presumably back up their decisions with skins.

Ganging up on, baiting, and trying to silence an active poster for trying to make sense of NetEase's decisions is weird, especially when they've already stated that they agree with the premise that NetEase is racist.
If the data says that Black characters sell less (although, why we blindly trust this amorphous data is also a concern considering one of the basic principles of capitalism is that consumer demand doesn't drive what gets produced), and NetEase is only doing what's in its financial interests, then it's not just NetEase that is racist and gamers should really confront that about themselves.
Nepenthe wrote:
Quote:I mean, yeah, look at the state of the world. People suck

I don't know what the data says but my guess is that the reason why Strategists, Magik, Psylocke, Scarlet Witch and Spider-man are showered with legendary skins is because people scoop up all their skins

Old School Gamer saying that if people want more Storm skins they should buy more Storm skins shouldn't be controversial
Assuming the data correlates perfectly with skin distribution (again, it probably doesn't if we understand how capitalism works but let's just assume): The people who want more Storm skins are already buying the Storm skins to begin with. It's up to people who aren't buying Storm skins and yet see the racism inherent in the way not just Marvel Rivals but all hero shooters divvy up their cosmetics to all the white and light-skinned Asian characters to buy more Storm skins.

But they're not going to do that because gamers don't actually care about the racism in their hobby.

I mean hell, the fact that we literally have no data on hand and yet we assume Black characters obviously sell less, so much so that it justifies giving them peanuts, is speaking volumes in ways people in this thread aren't clocking lol.

So why did Widow get a Legendary when she was the lowest picked character in the game? If the "data" also says that skin distribution correlates with pick rate, which is the argument that now bitcloudrzr is making ("because the the black characters except for Cloak either have more complex gameplay, are situational, or are in an archetype that is not as popular") she shouldn't have gotten one at that time. So why did she get one at that time? Were the devs just feeling sorry for her?

Quote:Nepenthe It's not the same thing because rework for Natasha was already finished and she never got a Legendary skin before her Summer skin. It was her first Legendary and Storm already had one.
Doesn't seem to be the case:
Quote:Widow was such a low pick and ranked below almost everyone, yet got a legendary weeks BEFORE her rework.
They had no idea how the rework was going to fare because there was no "data" for the rework to base the decision off of. So why make a "big investment" "concepting, animating, and creating" a Legendary skin for a character with an extremely low pick rate in an environment where the devs of one of the most successful live service games in recent memory still "sadly can't afford" taking a risk to give her that skin before any "data" came in about how the rework would affect pick rates?

Quote:Nepenthe when the skin came out it was two weeks before the rework in S9, they knew what was going to happen. She is now one of the top picked and strongest dps.
Oh, so now they magically knew what was going to happen before any "data" came in?! Interesting!!!
Nepenteh wrote:
Quote:They turned her into one of the easiest to use characters, of course they knew.

Wow! And here I thought all this time the Black characters weren't getting cosmetics at reasonable rates because they had data on hand that says they don't sell enough to be worth it.

Man, sounds like it's just good ol' fashioned racism then.

Exactly. It's not popularity determining the actions of the developers of any of these hero shooters because there's no direct correlation that's been established. It's just corporate mandate which reinforces racist norms in a society whose economic foundation was literally built on racism.
Nepenthe wrote:
Quote:I was talking in general, it wasn't targeted at you dw. Just something i noticed online like reddit, twitter, discord… etc.
There seems to be a big stigma mainly towards some female heroes and Strategist role in general. It can be very, very toxic and discouraging.
And i am not trying to change the topic here, just noticing that community in general can be very toxic and what kind of ppl Marvel attracts.
I play the equivalent class in Overwatch and there is an overwhelming complaint about the light-skinned women supports getting more skins than the dark-skinned men in the same class, especially when some of the former heroes haven't been around as long as the latter. And it's true; we've compiled the "data" over and over again, and an artist on the game all but admitted on Twitter that they don't make direct decisions about what cosmetics get put in the game.

But just as well, let's not start acting like racism isn't a blind spot by feminists. Yes, gamers can be misogynistic in the way they treat female heroes and the support class in general. I play it. I've been harassed. But that doesn't really address the issue of cosmetic distribution nor does it address the fact that a lot of these same people championing and defending female characters under the banner of "diversity" have a huge blind spot when it comes to race and racism. No one is coming to my rescue or giving a shit about my experience as a Lucio main lol.

Quote:The Guardian reported interviewing academics who believed that the affair would shock academia and "set the study of race in Britain back 20 years."[12] Paul Gilroy, a sociologist at University College London, stated his concern that it would overshadow cuts being made to humanities programmes, and that "The unthinking culture warriors who have supported [Arday] unconditionally share responsibility with his racist critics for making life harder for Black academics and dragging UK higher education deeper into the mire."

Man, is all kinds of depressing. Willam

that one Norm joke, as far as the eye can see

"some say the worst part of the arday situation was how it affects innocent blacks, and I disagree"

"you disagree with that?"

"yeah, I thought it was the plagiarism"

Have you read any of Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers run as well? Doom being the big bad in the end totally makes sense. That whole Hickman run was fucking unreal, there hasn't been anything as good from Marvel since. Al Ewings Ultimates run is probably the closest in terms of the grand scale of things.

MCU Doom being the new Avengers big bad after one post-credits scene vs Thanos being built up over multiple phases does suck though.
