It’s easy to identify how people get unnecessarily mean towards random actresses. Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence had moments where people hated them for, I don’t know, being too popular? usually the hate is from other women but that’s besides the point.

With Brie, I mean, you can imagine the massive ego boost after winning an Oscar making her somewhat unpleasant. Who can say. Famously when Stan Lee passed away, she posted a selfie where she’s drinking a mimosa holding a bag with her name written on it and a caption like “rip so sad.” Because I don’t think the chud sphere went after the Star Wars Rey actress. So much of the shit they like doesn't even feel like it reads the Wikipedia pages on whatever topic they're explaining. 90% of the time you know exactly what these channels are going to say and the other 10% is when they say something so completely absurd it was difficult to predict. And they're always so long compared to the amount of content within. I don't understand it. So many of them aren't even watchable for how bad it is, it's soulless annoying smugness that's completely non-skeptical about uncritically repeating things somebody else said. And the unsupported assertions.

Every piece of marketing material so far for The Acolyte seems like it's been brigaded. Every comment I see on YouTube, Twitter, etc. just have people crying woke or parroting the same point about how the showrunner used to be Weinstein's assistant.

At the end of the day, if the show is good then all these chuds will be drowned out like we've seen with stuff like Baldur's Gate 3 or X-Men 97. At the same time though, it feels like every major online platform now (YouTube, Twitter, Reddit, etc.) has just been taken over by far-right communities crying all the damn time. For Star Wars, a part of it is self-inflicted. The quality of recent projects has been all over the place and turned off general audiences. This makes it so that these incels are the ones with the loudest voice now.

I don't see it changing in the near future either. The lead-up to the Rey movie will be absolutely awful. The hope is Lucasfilm makes sure they get everything right and make a damn good movie so the idiots won't have anything to say, but even then a level of hate will still permeate the project up for release. Idk man. I don't envy anyone that signs up for a Star Wars project. At least Andor will offer a brief respite, but every other upcoming project (if they even come out that is) seems slated for controversy.

I see it as a loud minority who don't deserve our attention. Just ignore it.

Star Wars is extra fucked, but what you're describing is what is happening in every single easy access community on the internet. It will happen with every video game, movie, television show or interpretive dance that has a woman or minority at the front of it. It will happen if non-cis folk are given even a tiny shimmer of existence. For existing IPs like Star Wars it will happen if the story doesn't do exactly whatever dumb shit the vocal chuds think it should.

Also remember, not that it's necessarily relevant to your example: it's an election year for half the planet (like, statistically: 3.7 billion people in 70 countries have or had national elections this year). Bots exist. Intentional social destabilisation exists. When you hear that chuds are super duper outraged out something, like, are they though? Does anyone really actually care? How much of that is astroturfed? Probably a lot.

I'd argue that it even extends to the sort of fascistic good-ol'-days pining being a common factor of these sort of reactionary outbursts. I think Alan Moore's whole point about superhero media attracting fascistic followings applies to much more than that genre alone, you see it all the time with these old movies/shows that people watched and looked up to as kids and often had very clear-cut and simplistic good guys vs. bad guys narratives. When they take that nostalgia too seriously, and get reactionary about it, I think it's no wonder it goes to such a toxic right-wing sort of place and that's why it happens time and time again.

I will never forget we had users asking for people to be harassed and made several thread mocking and being REALLY nasty to others... Because like 3 users didn't like a joke in Mandolorian about eggs while at the same time another user was getting mocked on mass furiously for the crime of saying they love Mando and thought it was the best Star Wars show... Because those are totally normal responses /s

The problem with these platforms is that they reward low effort chud, Twitter especially post Mush rewards it. I've said it before but I feel companies were forced to take responsibility for what is posted on their sites, these chuds would quickly find themselves losing their voices. And with YouTube, we KNOW they can if they wanted very quickly change their algorithm so that the chuds get buried, we saw this with how they changed it after the abuse Brie Larson was getting in the run up to CM but they just don't because they profit of it.

I saw the trailer for Acolytes at the cinema and it struck me hard how lame star wars is now. Unthinkable when I was a kid even accounting for the prequels. Its become something else entirely, like the simpsons.
