I think people just want empathy. Since everybody's situation is unique, what worked for one person could be terrible advice for another person.

A lot of well-off person general advice comes across as some variety of "Have a Double Income, Don't Have Kids, Work Hard at a Good Paying Job that you can work your way up in, save and invest most of your money when you're young" which can just come off as condescending or irrelevant. Especially when the job market is very different now than it was 20-30 years ago.

I believe many want empathy, but I don't think a lot of the responses are ones that could gain empathy. People in tragic or hard to reverse situations will get empathy if they talk about their situation, but if they just come and get upset that a thread like this.. Exist, then they aren't looking for empathy, they are looking to be upset. Still, you're right that a lot of the things that worked before won't work today or that some decisions can't ethically be undone for sure, but I'd like to think if I could recall all the reasons I put myself in X situation, that I'd at least own it and not be upset at others who did not, even if I wish I was doing better, that's just human nature.

I guess I've just never felt simply being upset was a healthy outlook, being upset without anything to aim at would likely drive me insane.

Issue is no one should be struggling for basic necessities of life at all. Food, water and shelter should come to everyone on a fundamental level. There will always be people who don't want to put in any effort to succeed but if you go to work for 30 hours a week why should you be struggling with rent and food?

Everyone can do more to improve their situation but at what point is this a societal issue? I'm Canadian but I will clear $100k for the first time in my life. I have an undergrad and a masters. I don't have a partner. I have had to sacrafice a lot of things to be in a situation where I feel pretty good about my situation. I am exceptionally fortunate for my postion.

That said I dont really see how I can do home ownership now. I can definitely do more to look for other jobs and other means of income. I can cut back more. But like, if I still am not in an ideal situation (ideal being I can't have all the middle class ideals, I am by no means struggling) and I have put in lots of effort and make good money, how can we seriously be telling people down bad to work harder to solve their own problems? Like at what point is there a fundamental disconnect between our effort and our reality?

I don't think shelter, food, water, etc should currently come to just anyone because they exist, they should however come with any job that one would call a full time position, along with healthcare, and some reasonable expectation for being at least moderately comfortable. As much as we like to think otherwise, most of us are still here to survive and try to sprinkle in good times where we can, but we're not at a point on Earth where life can just be cushy for everyone while we do nothing, as awesome as that would be. I don't believe in providing for people unwilling to provide for themselves, but I do believe in providing for those who can't, and I don't believe corporate structure should legally be allowed to revolve around exploitation, but that in itself is a pipedream right now. All of that of course assumes our social structure has jobs for everyone and can sustain itself, which is not certain anymore, and I sadly have no idea how to correct that with how corrupt the world is.

Thing is, most of us are closer to being homeless than being rich, even those of us making 100K a year or whatever. A person who gets a job at that level and eventually becomes 'a millionaire' by the time they are old and losing bodily functions, is not the same class of person who is suppressing your wages and forcing us into capitalist subservience while holding no accountability to our health and well being. The entire system is fucked and in need of incredible amounts of reform.

Thing is, it's healthier to take aim at what is causing the actual problem, rather than a person who might be doing better than you are, it isn't too different to how politicians try to get people to hate other races, genders, etc, in order to distract them from the actual problems ruining their lives. A person making 25K, 50K, or 100K still has the same enemy, just at different tiers in life.

If ever society moves to a point where we can truly provide basic comforts to all while also leaving room for those to thrive when they feel like being ambitious, I'm all for it, I just think right now there are a lot of people who could be doing far better who opt not to, and those people hiding behind a shield of blaming everything else make it much harder for those actually screwed over to be heard, it clouds things up a lot and isn't great.

Right now we're at a point where I think a full time job should at minimum afford reasonable comfort to live on a single income, yet companies are rapidly trying to remove humans from the workforce while not thinking through how they will make money if no one is left to pay them, and no government intervention on the horizon to stop societal collapse, so the outlook isn't good in my mind, but part of finding paths to better is having leveled discussion.

I have full empathy for both people who could not help their situation as well as people who could have, but the empathy drops when people speak out against you as if you're the reason for their problems, which I think is reasonable. I'm almost certain almost no one on this forum is actually responsible for whatever problems we may have in life when it comes to this stuff.

Looks matter. Baldurs Gate 3 and Claire Obscur both have "realistic" looking character designs. JRPG's mostly have "Anime" character designs.

Certain styles won't appeal to everyone and it just so happens that the games with "realistic" character designs are far more popular than the "anime" style games.

Id argue the same also applies to storytelling..... naturally western style storytelling telling will be more popular in the west and maybe even the world than japanese style storytelling. Having consumed stories from all over the world in my 34 years of living.... Japanese stories are weird as hell in comparison to everything else in the world.... it just is.

Why am I projecting? Have you paid attention to the rest of this thread and how many pages are devoted to discussing whether Clair Obscur is as anime (or not) as your favorite JRPG? lol

As for E33's combat, can you tell me how innovative it actually is? As far as I have been able to appreciate, these mechanics are very similar to the ones from Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi series. As for recent RPGs with more innovative turn based combat I can think: Octopath Traveller's, SaGa Scarlet Grace's, Paper Mario Origami King's, Divinity Original Sin 2's, Trails through Daybreak's (a weird blend where you can switch between action and turn-based combat), ... Again, it's not like the overall package in these games is not great and all they have going for is the combat.

And yes, curiously we mostly do this for RPGs. It's as if (Table-Top) RPGs is a very geek culture thing and some people are overly protective and conservative about it. How many times have I seen some say that Japanese RPGs are like dumbed-down versions which offer little FREEDOM in comparison? I can't keep the count.

You're telling people why they like a game you haven't played based on your own surface level view. You literally have to project to do that.

Regarding combat, you're not asked to respond to multiple types of attacks in succession, there are also the different elemental mechanics and how the picto system interacts with your abilities. This is like me saying Octopath is just like Bravely Default because I watched some of it. My point was, if you're gonna go that route, it helps to maybe touch the game ... or just look up the Dualliste fight.
If we're counting Origami King as innovative, then innovative clearly doesn't have to mean good here. The boss battles are interesting. The enemy to enemy combat isn't. Is there a reason I should prefer Divinity Original Sin's combat to CO?

I guess ultimately I feel weird about people using their salt about people not liking their preferred game genre to accuse others of racism. It's ... gross.

It's not Canada or anywhere else in the West. I wouldn't blame anyone, but I would add that if you have ever had a history of suicide ideation - even minor - or live with someone that does, I would strongly urge you to not own a firearm. If you live with adolescents, doubly so. Just the ownership of a gun on it's own increases the risk factor of attempting suicide yet alone the outcome of the attempt. Outside of that make sure you're well read on the science and studies around gun ownership when weighing up the decision.

Hello kind of my introduction post to resetera in general so will put this blurb first. Lurking for a very long time and also lurked on gaf for a long time before that. Made a couple posts here on a different acc after the migration but this is a proper hello

Ok so I need some advice as it relates to the boycott. For clarity I am a Palestinian-Italian woman living in Canada. I want to boycott and have been trying to boycott Microsoft as affectively as possible for obvious reason. I don't want to be complicit in the genocide of my own people.

Some of my favourite games in years past was also the elder scroll franchise games. Will not be buying anymore of course while they are currently under Microsoft purview but had a question regarding past entries to the franchise I purchased years ago and now currently own.

If I were to play these older copies of titles on my ps would this benefit Microsoft in some way. Such as with user data or analytics etc? Is there a way to avoid this with offline mode? Does it matter that I am playing the previous PS copies I bought? This is not vital to me I have not played these older copies in months since learning what I have of Microsoft as a company, but I am asking for the future

Your analytics are of extremely limited value for legacy titles, especially for SP games. Playing offline would cut them off to an extent as you'd be playing on a platform they do not own but I imagine they get trophy statistics for their games. If you have a Bethesda account, you can unlink it from your PSN account by sending a customer support ticket to Bethesda (obviously not necessary if you never did this).

I usually just lurk this forum, but wanted to share my two cents about this as I believe in the somewhat cliché "be the change you wanna see in the world" approach.

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who's raising awareness on this: I wouldn't have known about Microsoft crimes if not for you all. Thanks to your efforts, I've cancelled my Game Pass and 365 subs a month or so ago, and more or less nuked Microsoft from my life for the foreseeable future. I'm only using a Windows for work that had received the O&O Shut Up treatment, because I have to make a living, but am running CachyOS on my own computer. I've also convinced a few of my friends to limit the usage of Microsoft products to an extent where they can still live with the inconvenience.

What I find concerning though, and I might get a warning or ban for this, is the lack of major commitment from Era and the gaming media to hold Microsoft seriously accountable. I believe the only way for this boycott to truly have an effect on Microsoft if there had been a greater push from those who can actually sway masses of gamers. Gamers can become hysterical when a general opinion on something is snowballing (i.e.: Game-key cards suck, Cyberpunk's garbage, Clair Obscur's the second coming of Christ) and I truly believe if there's enough of a push & outrage, there could be consequences for at least the gaming division of Microsoft.
I very much so appreciate that this thread is pinned on the front page of the Gaming Forum and that most Microsoft threads get two links at the very bottom containing info, but after seeing them once, I think the minds of most visitors just block these out as they are somewhat out of the way. There are also Microsoft topics where the warning is not there at all (i.e.: link, link). What I would like to see from Era is:

1. Limiting all discussion where the main topic is Microsoft to as few threads as possible, ideally one per forum at max. Similarly to how it was done with Cyberpunk iirc.
   
2. Starting the OP with a big ass warning in red about what Microsoft is doing (currently contributing to the killing of 60k Gazans, with nearly third of it being children). Sharing exactly what companies belong to Microsoft. Sharing exactly what you can do to boycott them, not putting the info behind a link. Having the same warning at the top and bottom of every page in the thread.
   
3. In one central place, giving visitors alternatives to Microsoft published titles, i.e.: BF6 instead of Black Ops 7, Gran Turismo 7 instead of Forza Horizon 5, etcetera. Asking them to at least avoid subbing to Game Pass or paying $80 for the MS products until something changes.
   
4. In one central place, letting visitors know that Linux is now actually a viable alternative.
   
5. Sharing every piece of update that comes out of this tragedy in a visible way.
   
6. Reaching out to contacts in the gaming media (press, YouTubers, influencers) to boycott reviews, news, content about Microsoft products or at least have somewhat of a similar approach to MS as to what I'm suggesting for Era. The only thing MS might understand is losing face and money. Let's make sure they lose it.
   
7. Letting visitors now that boycotting stuff is not black & white. It's about making the most effort that you can still live with for a better future. For example I can't completely boycott Meta due to my friends and family, but I sure as hell limit using their products as much as possible with the strictest privacy settings I can set and talk shit about the company. I have an iPhone too, I am not a saint, just trying to do the best I can.
   

I know the one BDS thread was enough for me to take notice, but most gamers won't take this situation seriously if the gaming media and influencers do not take it seriously.

Now I am reasonable, and I am absolutely aware that none of what I am suggesting is going to happen, as Xbox is one of the four major gaming platforms. Seriously pushing back against it, boycotting it sincerely would become a major inconvenience, as it is unavoidable that this would lead to annoying, angering and losing a significant portion of the site's visitors. And much like me, you folks also need to make a living.
So albeit I'm grateful for Era, I also think that we are doing a "let's have our cake and eat it too" approach and I was hoping that this post of mine might give the admins some food for thought. I also just wanted to air my frustration to be honest, and I apologize for that.

What I think Era could realistically do better, is at least ensuring that the two links, and related info the OPs themselves too are actually present in all Microsoft threads. It would be great if the two links were present at the top as well. If you guys need help to keep track of these threads popping up, I can DM them to one of the site's managers myself, as I usually scroll through most threads on the Forums' front pages at least twice a day.

I recall seeing some statistic where 90% of trans people are certifiably autistic, tracks with my biased viewpoint so I believe it.

Feels like history is lost or being ignored. America has a unique and horrible history which makes gun ownership a necessity, especially in minority communities.

I have several guns due to this history and what my grandpa and dad both experienced as a black man and boy in 50s America. America has a history of roving white people kicking in doors of black people, raping and murdering. There are people living today who LIVED through those times and vividly recall this history. Today in America there are places you keep an side eye when you drive through. So for many its not a one man army fantasy or some Rambo thing, its real life and potentially survival. And my people's living history has seen the similarties with the past and the resurgence of those same elements now emboldened.

Als there is this myth that these goverment goons and (eventua) mobs of morons will just run wild. I can say from experience as someone who been shot, NO ONE wants to get shot. That is a real reality.

So yeah. Get a gun, be able to protect yourself and your family.
