Lots to read and laugh at in the article, but this section stuck out for me: 

Many Black writers and professionals spoke out about racial disparities in the book world. In response, major publishers recruited and promoted Black editors and launched new imprints devoted to books by nonwhite authors. Publishing companies said they would diversify their work force and the books they publish, and created new diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Editors acquired books that addressed race and racism, many of which sold well.

Four years later, there is a growing sense that the momentum has stalled. Some agents and editors say that publishers’ appetite for books about race and racism has waned after sales for some of the titles they rushed to acquire failed to meet expectations.

While advocates say DEI policies are good for business, there is no data on their effectiveness in Australia, apart from the widely publicised male-female wage gaps reported by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

The lack of evidence makes them vulnerable. If, for instance, a business has to choose between pursuing progressive employment policies, or hiring the most productive workers, the latter approach is more attractive when profits are under pressure.

Similarly, companies that make DEI policies a high priority face a risk, in a challenging economic environment, of annoying shareholders.

It’s difficult not to see this as malicious. The trans person 100% knew it was going to cause a problem and make others uncomfortable. You have the rest of the internet, countless communities, many for the Ts and Qs and +s. Targeting the rare community meant as a space for women is intentional. To say nothing of seeking $200,000 in compensation.

And reading up on the app, the Ts targeted the app and founder is very much intentional.

In early 2020, in our initial testing phase when Giggle had not been on the App Store and Google Play for long and was only known to a handful of select women, it was discovered by the “Trans Rights Activist” corners of Twitter and Reddit. I did not know there were such places. Suddenly, we had 1000s of downloads. We were inundated. Trans women who did make it onto the app created “KILL TERF” profiles (among many other threats). There was an orchestrated – albeit failed – attempt to get Giggle removed from the App Store and Google Play. There was some media attention, all of which called me a TERF and Giggle, Transphobic. Not one journalist asked for a comment or facts. I didn’t understand what was happening. To be honest, I’d never heard of the word “TERF” before.

Recently, I was told by a member of the Australian media that I would only get media coverage if I “stopped being a TERF”. However, 99.9% of the rape threats, death threats and general online abuse I now receive is from self-described Trans Rights Activists. Self identified trans women and the men who support them. Why do I need to ignore this behaviour to be heard?

By matching that data to percentages of students at each campus who receive Pell Grants (which are awarded to students from moderate- and low-income families), we came to an unsurprising conclusion: Pro-Palestinian protests have been rare at colleges with high percentages of Pell students. Encampments at such colleges have been rarer still. A few outliers exist, such as Cal State Los Angeles, the City College of New York, and Rutgers University–Newark. But in the vast majority of cases, campuses that educate students mostly from working-class backgrounds have not had any protest activity. For example, at the 78 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) on the Monthly’s list, 64 percent of the students, on average, receive Pell Grants. Yet according to our data, none of those institutions have had encampments and only nine have had protests, a significantly lower rate than non-HBCU schools.

Protest activity has been common, however, at elite schools with both low acceptance rates and few Pell students. You can see these findings in the chart below.
