Consumer culture might be shallow but I enjoyed lurking GAF back in the day for it. People enjoying things is fun.

Every now and then some ree bot will break programming and publicly wonder about the massive decline in thread activity compared to 5+ years ago. Those posts almost always go unanswered because anyone who answers will get an instant ban   at most someone will do a "yeah I wonder why *wink wink*"

My tinfoil hat theory is that Resetera has been instrumental in making sure that BBS style forums never become popular again. The countless people that were run out of there by the mentally ill cliques and mods are all now firmly entrenched in algorithm-based social media platforms.

I think all those people realized it's much better to be moderated by some faceless tech company than cliques of psychopaths who will gaslight you, hyper analyze your posts and ban bait you until you are successfully banned by one of their pet mods.

completely unsearchable, often unfindable even due to link rot to the server itself, whole channels of worthwhile information deleted by power tripping mods because a couple people shat it up, and yet everyone and their mother wants to shunt you off to the discord for all questions, including game companies, software providers, anything you can imagine you have to go to the secret tucked-away discord fiefdom with esoteric rules you don't know about until you're banned

reddit, cursed though it is, is the last bastion of public information

Always makes me feel like some boomer but truly what is the value of discord. It's like some giant group chat with hundreds if not thousands of people. And say I'm in the "Gaming news" channel and want to talk about a new trailer for Tomb Raider, I now have to sift through all the messages of people talking about GTA, Call of Duty, Zelda remake, Memes etc. etc

Just imagine every gaming thread on Resetera shoved into 3-4 channels. That has been my experience with discord so far

I think you can make a case about the lightsaber being more mainstream while less people recognize that it comes from Star Wars, something that doesn’t happen with the PokeBall. servers are themselves like "subforums/subreddits" and channels are like "threads," I guess

and because you love tomb raider so much you're in 5 different discords for it including the modding one which has a more active general chat for some reason and also the two that are at each other's throats and hate each other because one of them is "run by chuds" and the other has a permanent rainbow baked into its server icon

Discord reminds me of when they added party chat to Xbox Live. On the original Xbox and early 360, everyone had a headset, and yeah you’d get called a faggot by an 11-year-old sometimes, but you could meet people, team up, talk shit, actually make friends.

Then they added private party chat and the public lobbies are silent now, because everyone’s just talking to their friends.

And of course most consoles now integrate Discord so you never have to leave your little clique when playing online.

I would suspect it encourages groupthink and clique-behavior because of the nature of the threat of ostracization from the entire social group. You can see the grip Era already has on a certain type, now imagine someone like many of its members integrated into a more intimate and active conversation that is all circular affirming feedback without any outside voices. Especially if they're the kind of anti-social shut-in who has a virulent obsession with status and acceptance. Now you face the threat of losing your sole social outlet if you misstep against the loudest and highest status voices.
