England's rise from laughing stock to actual contenders has had similar origins. You can map Australia's fall from 2006 golden generation to recent struggles almost exactly to the creation of the A-League. Top talent stopped going to Europe as teenagers and stayed longer in the substandard A-League and their development slowed because they weren't required to develop that professionalism. It's only been this current generation of players that have left for Europe as teenagers that have restored some respectability. We don't have the resources. We don't have a proper youth training system. We're dominated by two teams who buy in all their talent so we're fucked when it comes to internationals. Last night's first goal was so embarrassing I immediately turned off the TV and went to bed.
