Sometimes these people remind us all that they aren't exactly bright, just sometimes lucky.

Dead Ringers was excellent, and they've got all the Fargo seasons but there's not much else. Reacher was ok. The best thing about Prime is you can actually buy shows and films.

I thought Good Omens was quite a lot of fun, had an almost "Pushing Daisies" irreverence to it. Though I should mention, I've not read the book it's based upon.

Anyway Mandy - assuming this trivia is right, then I was right "All the interviewees were briefed that Cunk was a comedy parody character, and were told to treat her like an ignorant child" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt16867040/trivia/?item=tr6742528

Quote:The Netflix show is a continuation of the BBC show as Diane Morgan takes Cunk across the globe. But how authentic are the interviews? Well, for the featured experts, these conversations are as real as they get. “They are just told they are being interviewed for a BBC history documentary. I think. They are quite flattered and are keen to explain their area of expertise. We are not taking the piss out of them, but it’s nice to see them struggling and having to recalibrate their ideas,” the comedian shared with Evening Standard. https://www.standard.co.uk/culture/diane-morgan-interview-i-prefer-playing-philomena-cunk-to-being-myself-a3798976.html Anyway Succession is half price on Amazon Prime at the moment

Late to the party but man, this is one of the absolute best shows I've seen over the last decade. Stunning on every level, very well done. It's a crime it wasn't renewed for a second season, but at least it's not a cliffhanger.

Some bigger names (Michael Mann, James Gunn, Ryan Murphy) have ‘crossed the picket line’ and siding with the studios. And compared to the last big strike, somehow audiences have less restraint. People who “stand with the wga” will fold the second it’s a light inconvenience for them. Also, if somebody told me the studios have been silently experimenting with AI writers, I’d believe them. Saw a trailer for a Blue Beetle show yesterday. An exchange is near verbatim: “your family makes you weak!” ”No, my family is what makes me strong!” That shit was trained on Fast and Furious and Marvel movie (pre-2020) scripts.

The writers guild picked a terrible time to protest.
The economy is in the dumps, many big budget TV shows and movies flopped or were cancelled in favor of tax write offs, consumers are cancelling subscriptions, rights of big IP's like Tomb Raider and LOTR were sold for peanuts to Amazon/Embracer and what is being produced is mostly based on existing long running franchises, historical events, videogame IP's or books. The one movie that exceeded expectations: The Super Mario Movie, hardly had any writing or plot at all. ![]()

I must admit, I have less sympathy for the writers than I did the last time there was a big writers strike affecting shows.
It is at least partly my perception that there are more bad writers around now, especially on historically popular franchises trying to 'subvert' them, and their self-insert characters demolishing strawmen adversaries in clippable and sharable <10 second snippets so they can yaaaaaas queeeeeen them around social media means I pretty much consider them already rewarding themselves and they don't deserve the extra cash on top of that. ![]()

Jury Duty was fun but the aftermath is a little depressing. They lean hard into the guy being such a good person and hero for, as an example, not swindling an elderly Asian man out of thousands of dollars. Nothing against the guy. He seems decent and affable. It’s more revealing what others must think about the average person that this is a shock to their system. I’d read comments like “if I were in his position, I’d break my autistic neighbor’s legs. He’s such a good guy!”

He’s such a good guy!” everything about it seems like it got ruined by (I'm assuming) the pandemic - it got dumped exclusively on amazons free-tier streaming service freevee (in my country, dunno if its the same internationally) and it seems like they just had to cut it short and wrap everything up
A bit late, but man season 2 episode 7 of The Bear (Forks) was some amazing TV. After the emotional fuckery of episode 6 I needed some time before watching e7 and it delivered exactly what I needed. Not sure if I've been this emotionally affected by a TV show for years. Maybe Ted Lasso...maybe.
I'm watching the last two episodes tonight. I really want this season to end on a positive note. Like, I'll be devastated for the characters if things go bad. Edit: Done. ![]() ![]()

Finished THE RECRUIT on Netflix. Still enjoying the Bourne-like filming style of most of it, and Discount Angelina Jolie is still pretty interesting. The kid they have playing the main big dope is good, and pretty believable. Sadly, most of the political stuff is so feasible that almost no-one is really a likable character. Maybe the main guy and his friends, but they also make bad or selfish decisions, even while everyone around them is being tactically political.
Probably start The Bear next, but not sure if wife will enjoy it. We lean toward simple procedurals.
I don't know a goddamn thing about One Piece the Manga/Anime read the manga in shonen jump when they started bringing it out in the US in the very late 90's iirc, only read a few chapters but don't remember much about it so I don't know if it butchered any characterizations or whatever.
![]() Enjoyed the netflix live action for what it is, it's not perfect some hokey fight choreography and the main cast acting ranges from mediocre to godawful but in terms of a live action adaptation it's top tier, none the less if you want to watch an entertaining adventure show you can definitely do way worse, I whole heartedly recommend it.
