Quote:The differences between JRPGs and "CRPGs" (a now-nebulous descriptor that traditionally includes isometric games like BG, Planescape, Disco Elysium, Shadowrun, etc.) tend to be the subject of some of the most heated gaming arguments. One of the central sticking points seems to be how JRPG fans often prefer party-based turn-based combat over the action-like real-time combat seen in AAA western RPGs like Elder Scrolls or The Witcher. For a while, I've been wondering if any people who usually stick to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest-style RPGs have had any interest in the "traditional" CRPGs that have come to consoles in recent years.

The biggest one right now is obviously BG3. I think the PS5 version is at the top of pre-order charts on PSN right now, but I wonder what demographic is behind all those pre-orders. How much of it is fans of BioWare or CDProjekt games? Are people who prefer turn-based JRPGs at least interested in trying out BG3, or does its deep non-linear approach run counter to what some people go for in RPGs?
Why just ps5 and not pc too?

Their whole design ethos of "just reload your quicksave six billion times until you get some rolls that don't result in your party getting instawiped or overwhelmed by enemy action economy, then do it again 3 minutes later in the next encounter" drives me crazy.

The irony is that the Japanese based their early RPG game designs on D&D and tried to make clones of Wizardry and Ultima for PC based systems.
However PC's were expensive so the two games that made JRPGs much more accessible to a bigger audience were Dragon Quest(Turn-based RPG) and The Legend of Zelda(Action RPG). Both used mechanics seen in prior games but combined them effectively and simplified them to create new experiences more players could enjoy. A lot of RPGs are basically a combination of two games that came before it. Final Fantasy and YS are sort of a blend of Zelda with Dragon Quest.

From there the JRPGs continued to evolve on console. PC RPGs were no longer popular (outside of visual novels) and weren't released in Japan anymore.
In the west however RPGs took a different turn making use of the better tech that the PC had to offer. Thus games like Diablo, Daggerfall and Deus Ex came to be.
Of course this trend continued into the modern day, eventually leading to the likes of Skyrim.

It was probably people comparing Dark Souls to Zelda 1 that made Nintendo go back to see what made it tick and what other path they could've choosen with ALTTP/Ocarina of Time. Combine Dark Souls with Skyrim and you get Breath of the Wild.

You could argue that Baldurs Gate 3 actually moves the needle back to the path the Japanese choose with most of their RPGs based on D&D with monsters and stats.

They're acting like the fucking Guardian is one step away from Mein Kampf. No wonder they're off the deep end if that's too right-wing for them.

I wish the guardian actually was transphobic as they’re a real newspaper who do real journalism and as such could be useful in the fight against internet Wahhabism

I don’t think western media in general has earned any goodwill that warrants a charitable interpretation of their intentions. It is not a coincidence that a newspaper in a country with a small (4%) black population chose a picture of only black children for an article about historically bad grades. These things are not accidental.
Is this guy secretly shilling Russia today or something? I'm not sure what non-western media there is that at minimum doesn't have the same faults if not worse.

It's a real shame because I do think there are some talented writers there, especially in the sport section, and I'm old enough to remember when Charlie Brooker was a mainstay there, but now it's buried under a mountain of shite.

He’s right that it’s not an accident that they chose a photo of black kids in a country that’s 4% black, but I absolutely guarantee it was a well-meaning attempt to be inclusive. It’s the Guardian.

Here are a couple of exam result articles from last year showing the Guardian’s entirely white coverage:

Thu, Aug 17, 2023 10:15 CET

The esports fantasy competition MOBAFire LEC Fantasy Tournament, a collaboration between M.O.B.A. Network and E-GO App, has lived up to high expectations.

MOBAFire, the world's largest community for League of Legends players and operated by M.O.B.A. Network, launched fantasy tournaments last year in collaboration with E-GO App. Each participant takes on the role of a coach, competing to create the best team line-up with imaginary players based on data from major, real-life esports matches. Thousands have participated and competed for exciting prizes in the MOBAFire LEC Fantasy Tournament during the winter, spring, and summer of 2022-23.

The MOBAFire LEC Fantasy Tournament relies on data from the LEC Season, which has its final on August 19th. Six of the world's top teams will compete for the prestigious victory in the tournament, a substantial prize pool, and qualification for LoL Worlds – the biggest event of the year in the LoL realm. The winner will be announced on September 10th.

In the MOBAFire LEC Fantasy Tournament, community members have the opportunity to harness their engagement and knowledge about the LEC Season and its players. It is free to participate in the competition.

"Fantasy tournaments surrounding League of Legends are hugely popular in the MOBAFire community. This leads to an increasing number of visitors on MOBAFire, resulting in significant commercial gains," says Björn Mannerqvist, CEO of M.O.B.A. Network.

After evaluating this initiative in the fantasy tournament sector, and a previous smaller-scale fantasy project, M.O.B.A. Network has decided to conduct further fantasy tournaments in collaboration with E-GO App.

"We are very pleased that our partnership with MOBAFire continues. The fantasy tournaments about League of Legends have been warmly welcomed by thousands of gaming enthusiasts in our communities. Our analysis indicates that this partnership strengthens our brands and increases the recruitment of new customers," says Viktor Maisey, CEO of E-GO App.
