I do feel kind of bad for her but she also managed this particular outrage all by herself. Usually these soulless live action remakes are at least coated in a pretense that the original movies were amazing etc. and that's why it's time to remake them. But if you go on about how the original actually sucks you're not going to win over anyone.
As mentioned above, if the story really needs so much updating (and imo the real problem I imagine is that a faithful snow white remake would simply be too boring for modern audiences. I'm sure they'll add a huge CG battle in the third act or something) then completely remake the fairy tale from the ground up like Tangled and Frozen

I think that's unfair, just because she's the public face of stupid decisions somebody else made and she had to live with.

Like... what's she gonna say?
"The original story and cartoon were amazing, which is why 'we' decided to throw all that shit out because marketing dickheads who can't get the fuck off twitter decided they didn't want to see a white woman and some dwarfs as main characters, even though that is literally the fucking title of the story"

She's the puppet they wheel out to say whatever random shit pops into her head to try and build hype, the puppetmasters who fucked all this up are just gonna take a backseat in the shadows.
She probably has all kinds of contractual obligations to push everything about this film as amazing, even if she thinks its a huge turd (and I don't even know if she is wise enough to have figured out exactly why people fucking hate this so much)

I mean, usually they love to play it both ways. Like the Littler Mermaid marketing was full of praise for the original, but the movie then still had some changes to make it more modern and Ariel more of a hero. (sometimes perhaps a bit self defeating, like removing Ariel's agency in chasing the Prince) 

Ziegler actually seems pretty straightforward, not pretending that she loves the original when she didn't, a trait that's honestly something I'd like to see from more actors, but considering remakes are usually marketed towards the people who like the original it's terrible PR. Reminds me of Mark Wahlberg talking about how he didn't even play the Max Payne games before starring in the movie. I appreciate the honesty but I also doubt this adaption is in good care now. Add the whole culture war on top of it with remakes getting updated for "a modern audience"  and you got a shit show.

It doesn't seem that difficult to just say you're trying a new spin on it without talking about how the old beloved versions were trash. Just say some bullshit about how the great things with timeless stories is that everyone can try new visions of them because people will always know and have the originals. (Although, in this case like many Disney "classics" the originals are depressing horrible German folk stories.)

in fact exactly the way you mentioned...tangled and frozen are not the original stories' names, they aren't pretending to be the exact same story

if they wanted to, they could've called snow white a number of other things...but then thinking on that, I don't even know why you'd want to retell snow white, because it's kind of a very shitty story

Perfect example of why they're struggling. 1:1 re-creations of animated films aren't working yet they keep doing it for the potential of backend $$$. You'd think the massive success of Frozen would have been an obvious sign that creating new classics (inspired by older stories) was the way to go. Maybe not Snow White exactly but...what if you mixed Snow White with Gulliver's Travels. Instead of dwarves, it's about her stumbling into some magical land where she's taller than everyone, and she gets put to sleep by the queen after trying to help the small people with [insert heroic thing]. Instead of falling in love with a prince, what if you make the prince a chauvinist brat whose squire is a humble guy who ends up being a hero. Like...you can do this all types of ways without offending dwarves or making Snow White completely helpless.

Of course it's hard to think imaginatively if you're stuck in the quagmire of (adult) modern thinking, which usually just boils down to "what if the girl does the thing that the boy does instead," among other things.
