He's fucking this up but the more I think about it, the more that seems to be partially the goal. I think he understands that regardless of how much weird right wing stuff he pushes online, the overall sentiments on Twitter will remain generally liberal or leftist because of demographics. So there's an incentive to kill it off, or to severely cripple it. In part because he's already admitted his ultimate vision is some type of financial service, which he must think conservatives will flock to. Good luck with that.

Elon can keep X running without much trouble for a few more years at least.
He uses it as a vessel and platform for his libertarian-futurist ideology and the more controversial it is, the bigger the user base grows. The key now is to figure out how to monetize controversy. The ad model is dead within a few years anyway. Google is already having big trouble to juggle being a useful search engine and paid advertising. Meta is also moving towards 'ad-free' subscriptions.
