As we discussed several times in this thread banning things really isn’t a good solution. Where do you draw the line? We ban WWE for being part of the Trump admin but we don’t ban MS for being active participants in genocide? Do we ban EA because they are soon to be owned by Trumps son in law? Do we ban Amazon, Apple, Google and whatever AI stuff that is ripping off artists?

Interesting that this is the owner they suggest is the problem considering how both that thread and the EVO thread went.

Couldn't go to any today myself (work) but I have heard the turnout here locally in Texas is bigger than expected.

fun exchange on the No Kings thread. Somehow eyeball_kid manages to make himself more risible and pathetic than the "my mommy couldn't drive me/I didn't have enough spoons" posters.

I went to one in LA today, got there later than I had planned at around 2:30 and it was already thinning out. Ah well, still was nice to show up and be present.

These events are good, they make people feel a bit more unified, but I can't help but think of the contrast to the George Floyd protests. People were out every week, often every day. Doesn't a fascist takeover of our country, with masked thugs kidnapping people off the street, deserve at least that much?

True, though I don't think that's all there is to the difference. Some of it may also be that POC groups were very involved in George Floyd and their organizing skills are unbeaten.

I realize there's an aspect here of "be the change you want to see", but I guess I'm just saying that we, collectively, should be doing these way more often than every few months. And doing general strikes.

Please help. Indivisible has less than 10 people organizing in SF. 50501 has even less. We partner with ither unions and groups to create coalitions but that only goes so far. One thing that makes it different is that these protests have been exceptionally peaceful so police haven't escalated with anti-riot action. Once that happens or the military shows up things will get a lot more hot like then. As for a general strike, since we work with a lot of unions ive been told many times that the biggest friction against that is that unions establish in their contracts periods of non-strike thay prevents them from being able to time a general strike and non-union workers aren't organized enough.

I'm an introvert so organizing is definitely not my lane, but I'll see if there's a place where I can be useful with the little free time I have.

For a long time after the author started showing her true colors I was firmly of the opinion that there was nothing wrong with continuing to enjoy the franchise. It was an important part of my childhood and I understand how significant it is to many people.

However that all went out the window last year when she started openly funding anti-trans propaganda and organization. She has not been quiet about what she's using her money for and any support for her franchise, monetary or no, is actively hurting trans people.

I understand that some people don't care about that. But there is no "separating the art from the artist" justification here. It's not like HP Lovecraft where its all public domain and the artist has been dead for 100 years anyway. By celebrating this franchise you are endorsing hate and harm against a marginalized minority. Stuffing your fingers in your ears going "la la la" doesn't change that.

Some day they'll actually have an example of the "openly" "not quiet" funding. 🤞

I would like others to have fun! Specifically, I'd like trans folks scrolling the subreddit for the very LGBT-positive MMO to have fun browsing and not see people celebrating a book written by someone who's actively trying to destroy their civil rights.

Normally my feeling on this stuff is live and let live if someone's running an event that I think is kinda bad. In this case, OP wrote a disclaimer about how they don't support the author's views, so it felt worthwhile to me to comment here. Not sure if you're aware, but she's a massive figureheaed for UK anti-trans folks, a country where sadly those groups have been getting a lot of shitty legislation passed, hate crimes have been rising, and human rights groups like Amnesty International have been shouting warnings about this all. I don't think people in other countries know that stuff necessarily so I think it's worth mentioning. Some people deserve some rain on their parade, even if a couple bystanders might miss out on some fun.

I’m right here with you. if people don’t support her views, they need to stop giving her money and attention. and yes, this is giving her franchise attention, however indirectly. this, as a queer person, doesn’t signal that anyone involved is a safe person for us, no matter how many disclaimers they put

honestly i don’t even know how people can enjoy any of it anymore, personally. it was a huge part of my childhood and adolescence and i can’t stand any of it anymore simply because it originated from her hateful mind.

Yeah. People can like what they like, lots of shitty people have a hand in lots of different media.

But for something like this where the author's actively campaigning to deny that trans people should be allowed to exist... I think it oughtta be like someone talking about what kind of porn they're into. It's not that I'm saying they're a bad person for liking the wizard books, but I don't wanna hear about it in public spaces, keep it in its own specific fandom niche.

Hi, I'm a trans person scrolling reddit and I was OVERJOYED to see this post. I've felt very alienated by people weaponizing my identity against me to guilt trip me into turning against a franchise that has been very important to me and my family. This entire situation has been incredibly depressing and I thought for once I could gather together with like minded people and have fun and enjoy this piece of my childhood that's been villainized for no fault of it's own. But yeah, I should have known that was far too hopeful.

Well good for you, you can. Someone is hosting this event, you get to attend and enjoy it.

I'm not sure this comment is in good faith but I'll take it at face value and assume it is. So: sorry you feel alienated by folks asking not to see this franchise promoted. It sucks that people within a community have incompatible reactions and preferences! And it sucks more that it makes us burn through limited energy feeling hurt and trying to talk that over with one another, when at the end of the day, other marginalised folks are only ever gonna have limited means to address that trauma & the root cause of it lies elsewhere.

For myself, there's enough trans folks in my life who very strongly do not wanna see mention of her work, even indirectly. I want that opinion to be voiced because I know it matters a lot to them.

It's basic human decency to police all spaces for others.
