Geniune reflection on the subject of celebrity worship/gravedancing or masterful troll job?  

Sadly the thread died amongst all the commie tattoo whiplash before the usual suspects could dig in but not before self-styled freelance market director and notable idiot Minthara etched something remarkable:

People lionize their memory of people, places and things (games, TV, movies) because fandom and intrinsically blurring the lines between your own identity and that thing you like has become so commonplace.

In reality, it is totally okay to like people, places and things in a moment or things from one of those, without also trying to pave over all the flaws within them.

The other issue is that people often don't want to acknowledge the problematic nature of someone or something because they know it'll damage their relationship with that thing. For example, Fast and Furious fans may not want to acknowledge that Paul Walker liked them real real young (like 16 when he was 30+), because that would taint how they view those movies, view him and view the lionized version of their fandom in their head.

That's why I openly take a different approach with everything I like - openly try and look at it with clear eyes, be critical of the things I wish they'd do better, and acknowledge that people are right to be frustrated with things and can ask for things to be better. What fans fail to remember is that those people asking for things to be better or to remember people in an honest way are often former fans themselves, disappointed that the person or thing they love didn't do better and didn't learn from their mistakes.

I can be a fan of Marvel and the MCU and even projects like Wandavision and still openly acknowledge that Elizabeth Olsen is racist as fuck and I wish they'd recast her instead of continuing to whitewash the role - there's no conflict there for me.

I can also acknowledge that Ozzy Osbourne was a deeply complicated man damaged by a lifetime of drug use who repeatedly did problematic things throughout his life, but seemed, to me at least, to try and do good in those last few years of his life, even if that doesn't make up for the bad he did.

Michael Jackson is an unbelievable monster, but he also completely changed the music industry and a whole bunch of musical styles and genres are rooted in the music he created. Will I ever celebrate his music? Fuck no, but I understand why some do given the impact.

Kobe Bryant accomplished a lot in his career and fans in LA and around the world lionized him as possibly the best of all time, but that doesn't stop him from being a rapist and all the shit he put the people he effected through.

It's never been complicated from my point of view to acknowledge the impact the person or thing had, while also acknowledging how completely and utterly shit they were or some of their actions were.
