In the thread about Sarah Bond's next-gen Xbox statement, in the first page there are only 4-5 posts out of 50 that contain more than 15 words. 45 out of 50 posts are drivebys, lame jokes and image reactions. This kind of signal-to-noise ratio would put Twitter to shame. I don't know if anything can be done about this, probably not since most people seem to treat the forum as a social media feed, but under such circumstances trying to post something meaningful seems utterly pointless as it will get buried under a mountain of garbage. I don't know, maybe I got old and grumpy but I am very disappointed by the lack of effort in many posts.

Should also be noted that Bernie's not the only Senator defending Platner. Ruben Gallego and Martin Heinrich have also lent their defense for him. Time Stranger has been out for a bit now, so it's time I figure to finally discuss this, though it's an issue beyond just the games. This concerns the fact that the Western localization of Digimon is, frankly, a train wreck.



This goes beyond the older dubs changing things in the script and characterization. That's over and done with, we're getting subs to alleviate that and newer dub anime projects tend to use better scripts and direction (with the exception of Tri. and Kizuna's dub script, the latter of which was based on a sub that was mistranslated). I don't like the fact that so much of Digimon in the west is overly Anglicized and that's what people know but it's also unfortunately the reality we live in.



The problem is that Bandai and Toei collectively can't keep what they've changed straight to save their life. Attack names that have been one thing for years are suddenly using their Japanese names in Time Stranger. Yesterday's Crusadermon is LoadKnightmon is LordKnightmon. The card game uses completely different terminology for certain Types and classifications than the official Encyclopedia. I could go on and on.



Not to mention we still get poorly or awkwardly/stiffly translated side projects, like how Digimon Seekers was showing a machine translated version for the longest time, or how Liberator's comic and novel is very obviously a "first draft" translation effort.



This franchise deserves better than what we've been getting. There's no other way to put it.

Jesus, just let people post how they wanna post, low-effort or otherwise. Some people have such a narrow view of what they think is acceptable forum use, and everything outside of that needs banning or otherwise kerbing: see all the types of threads people want to filter out.



I'm not even disagreeing with the point about posting, but... it's an internet forum. People are going to post dumb shit and should be allowed to.



If anything, go the other way and implement more ways (and encourage more use of) tools to highlight high quality posts. I know "like" systems have been discussed to death and the answer seems to be no, but something like community threadmarks or highlights could let people draw attention to posts they consider high quality.



Let's promote the high quality posts and engagement rather than constantly trying to filter out posts that don't meet some arbitrary standard.

I mean, if you ask why, I ask why not? The point isn't to "consume more", it's "you are already consuming this thing, why not try something adjacent today to see if you like it?" Assuming your current favorite things are the only things that could make you happy is odd to me. If you eat your favorite food the same way for every meal, it becomes tasteless.



As an example, since it is at the top of my head from a recent thread, I got into Sailor Moon pretty late compared to most women my age. I was a tomboy growing up and set against liking pink, princesses, etc. I liked boy stuff like Power Rangers which later led to Super Sentai. I decided to give Sailor Moon a try when I was older because I wanted to check out more Japanese media aimed at girls and, lo and behold, Sailor Moon is Power Rangers, but a unique take on it I hadn't seen before.



Did this make me a "better person"? Er, no. It did give me a new perspective on something I like. It gives me a new avenue to talk about things that interest me. It makes it so I can find more things I enjoy. If I stayed at liking Power Rangers, not even branching out to Super Sentai, I would be so much more limited in knowing what it is I truly enjoyed about it.



Overtime this can lead to being a "better person", not because you have more things you like or whatever, but because you are experiencing the things you already like from new viewpoints and sometimes that can lead to introspection. I was so obsessed with not liking girly stuff when I was younger that it prevented me from seeing something I would have loved. I didn't figure that out with Sailor Moon in particular, but it is something I realized about myself by watching more things not aimed at boys and men. That doesn't mean I don't still love franchises that were meant for boys. I am on this forum after all, lol.

It's funny because, If I think about it a little, it's entirely possible that Pokemon specifically back in the day introduced the concept to me 25+ years ago because of Gen 2, which is my favorite gen. I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but this post reminded me that there are specifically non-binary Medabots now.

Originally how it worked is that they had a male and female tinpets (skeletons) and gendered sets of parts that fit those tinpets (the masculine ones generally being more attack focused and the feminine ones generally being more support focused). Some early games featured bonus tinpets which could mix and match. Then starting with S they specifically introduced a new class of gender neutral parts sets that can be used on either tinpet, which includes a lot of designs based on Dharmic deities since they're often traditionally depicted as being too powerful to be limited to one gender, essentially.

(I guess technically this would better represent sex than gender since the part that's supposed to represent the mind of the Medabot, the medal, was never restricted and could be swapped between male and female tinpets. But I don't know enough to say if they ever really played that up, whereas with the gender neutral Medabot parts definitely are.)

Pretty sure there's a random NPC somewhere in the city that says something along the lines of "just like people, Pokémon's gender can be male, female, or unknown", too. Can't wait until extremely normal Xitter users find that one.
