Title might be a little wonky, hopefully the idea gets across.

Recently there have been a few threads about the pronunciation of Cait Sith in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which seems to be adopting the common mispronunciation of the name for its English localization. It's been a rather heated topic.

Coincidentally I was recently looking at Japanese retro game manuals and I saw the one for Skyblazer. I had been vaguely aware of Skyblazer as a high quality SNES action platformer with a Goku-looking martial artist dude as the main character. What nobody told me is that it had a Hindu mythology theme that was downplayed by the localization.

In the original Japanese release, the characters all have the names of Hindu dieties or other supernatural beings such as Karura (Garuda) and Brahma. While most of the stages have fairly generic names, some of them include Sanskrit words refering to various Hindu concepts such as Naga, Gandarva or Maya. When this game was localized, most of the characters were given new names like Sky and Old Man, and the stages now similarly invoked nonspecific fantasy-sounding names like Faltine, Tarolisk, or Kh'lar, although you don't necessarily find these names in the same place as the Sanskrit words.

The game's music also plays into the aesthetic, featuring a lot of pieces with sitar.

I'd be tempted to suggest that maybe they wanted to avoid running afoul of Nintendo's policy against depictions of religion or to avoid offending people, except if they were doing that they didn't really do a good job. For one thing, Ashura kept his name in the localization. For another, you still see statues of Ganesha heavily featured in a number of levels in both the background and foreground. So my gut feeling is that they either thought that this would end up pissing off parents in Europe and North America or they thought that kids would find the Hindu references too inscrutable. If I wanted to give a more benign explanation, Google didn't exist when this game was localized, so maybe the translator just genuinely had no idea what all of this was.

I'm not going to be the one to claim offense here, but I do think it would have been neat to find a game with this aesthetic in Blockbuster in the nineties. It also makes me wonder how many similar missed opportunities there were back then. I've focused on a cultural case here, but I've also heard people express similar sentiment with Panel de Pon being localized into Tetris Attack; it's a shame that it was decided that the game was too girly for the west in its original form, whether you blame that on the attitudes of the company handling the localization or the audience they were trying to selling to.


(P.S.: I was looking at the credits at David Jaffe was a tester on this game - it was published by Sony worldwide, just different subsidiaries - so I'm kind of tempted to call this the original God of War just to be a jerk.)

Listen up. People are more than welcome to criticize Biden for his role in what is currently going on in Gaza. What you cannot do is take threads about other minority issues and turn them into threads about what is going on in Gaza. When you do that, you are basically telling people that you don't give a rat's ass about them or the issues that directly affect them. You might not think that, but that is the message being recieved.

So, threads about general speeches, like this one, and whatnot? Feel free to criticize him and hold him accountable.

Threads about how Trump wants to round up Hispanics and put them into concentration camps or about how the GOP is attempting to genocide trans people or other issues/programs that directly affect other minority groups? Let those people have the space to discuss the topic. Their issues matter and they should be given space to discuss them.

In addition, we're not doing this whole sniping at each other thing. There's going to be no "You're supporting x horrible thing because of how you are voting." Just because you are going to vote for Biden doesn't mean you support his treatment of the Palestinians, just like how choosing not to vote for him doesn't mean you support what the Republicans are doing to minority groups in America. If you do this kind of thing expect a ban and if you don't even live in the US in the first place then expect a bigger ban.

This is going to be a long and hard year for everyone, especially if Trump winds up winning the GOP primary. At the very least we can try and show each other some respect and to recognize that there are a lot of important issues that affect a lot of different minority groups and to give these groups space to discuss them.
