Speaking of mining for nuggets, I had an epiphany about why they all think their info is valuable. They think of "data-mining" like mining in video games where you get tons of useless shit and eventually find one tiny speck of gold. When it's more like, you know, real mining where you dig up tons of stuff for other purposes. So they think the value is in the specific user data, which is worthless, not the aggregate data which is what everyone actually wants. (Also, they're narcissists.)

I have recently gotten back into the Redwall franchise just to make reading a habit again and to distance myself, ironically, from digital media. I read the original Redwall and parts of Mattimeo as a child; I've recently restarted and finished Mattimeo, read Mossflower, and am now on Martin the Warrior. I must say...

The discrepancy between Martin's saintlihood and how he was in his life is honestly amusing.

The Redwallers in later generations look up to him as almost a Biblical figure, a sage who will come to them in times of need with symbolic knowledge. Zoom back in time, and we open Mossflower with him fighting a bunch of vermin trying to kidnap him in the streets bare-handed. Whenever he is brought forth to the major villain, guarantee he's gonna try to bite them and they better be ready to withdraw in time. He's restrained? He's gonna be tussling regardless. You pile on top of him? He's gnashing like a little gremlin. He was laughing like a maniac, blood dripping down his body, while fighting Tsarmina, like "Finally, I get to kill this goddamn cat."

It is just Black Air Force energy up and down. He is absolutely ready to cash the checks he writes.

What made Martin amazing is not that he was any more moral than the other Redwallers. It's not that he was any smarter than them, or stronger, or even any braver....

It's just that he just didn't give a damn. Right was right; wrong was wrong. If you were wrong, he wanted the smoke immediately. Dude weighed a few ounces and wanted to meet in the streets. "Oh, you're a slaver? That's nice; face the wall now."

Unhinged little dude. The universe is lucky he wasn't ever corruptible because honestly he could've probably taken all of Salamandastron just off of sheer "I don't care" energy.

I love the idea of Redwall as a possible antidote to digital toxicity and addiction. Martin was my first, but it’s been a while since I’ve wielded the blade. May have to start gnashing again and relive the battles.

I was looking for a book- any book- around the house just to start with and noticed Mattimeo on my bookshelf. Forgot where I stopped all those years ago, so I started it over and was enthralled. I do actually read ebooks, mainly of the political variety, but it's just not the same. Once I finish Martin, it's back to the bookstore!

I liked the back and forth between the chase of the slavers and the Abbey being holed up from a bunch of corvids, as well as almost everything going wrong for both heroic factions. It's just trouble at every turn in that one haha.

Martin probably looked saintly to the Abbeybeasts because a) he was chill as long as he didn’t need to throw paws, and b) he stood next to Gonff. The second in particular probably went a long way towards his modern reputation.

Don't tell Doomfist Mains this. They have been going insane for the past couple of days.

For good reason. People are allowed to be upset about something. You guys always make it out to be that being angry about anything is always wrong.

This game is 10 years old. If you're like in your late 20s/early 30s spamming reaction gifs over a fictional character dying with everything happening in the world right now, log off and join and organization.

People are upset because Doom was fast enough to grab Tracer mid-blink, strong enough to one-punch Genji, and (supposedly) is a match (or maybe just below?) an ulting Winston.

But then Vendetta is able to land critical hits on him way too easily. If Vendetta was made to look faster or smarter in the showdown - people would be appreciative - but instead of Vendetta being made to look impressive, they just made Doom look pathetic instead.

Power scaling is important for a good story. Otherwise you’re always just at the whim of the writer - and nothing actually has to make sense. Characters go from having meaningful roles to being reduced to tools for the lazy writer who don’t know how to solve the problems that they build-up in their own stories.

There's more lore than just that cinematic (wherein he still lost). He lost against Orisa in her first real battle in the book "The Hero of Numbani," and he also tied Mauga. He's not invincible, and the fact that y'all ever thought he was shows that y'all were never paying that much attention to what came after that one cinematic.

Orisa was built just to hardcounter him. The draw with mauga means that mauga is one of the strongest characters in universe not that doom is weaker than people thought.

Neither of these really address the point, which is basically that Doomfist has lost before and that there are other new Heroes that can at least go toe-to-toe with him.

Furthermore, it's hypocritical that folks are mad at Vendetta getting the upper hand on him when they first meet (despite her being given significantly more development time and context before their fight) but were totally fine with him bodying someone who can blip through time in his introduction with no context, no build-up, nothing.

Generally, people overestimated this character's strength as Team Four elaborated on it over the years, basically hanging onto one random child's theory-crafting from an 11 year old short. It was Pokedex levels of exaggeration on that front but people ran with it even as Team Four was like "Mmmm, he got whooped by a gorilla tho."

Most of the reaction against the short is just based on vibes. And I get it. Doomfist has cool vibes. But he barely has any dubs; dude has jobbed more than people want to admit.

I am plat. I have always been plat. I likely always will be, barring changes in my lifestyle that allow me to grind comp like I sometimes think I'd like to. I'm fine with where I belong.

Why in the absolute hell then are you consistently putting me against high Diamond and low Master players in fuckin' Quickplay, with a GM and Top 500 every now and again? Why? This has been going on for about two weeks now, and I'm sick of it.

Are you saying my MMR is actually high enough to reasonably compete in these lobbies? The scoreboard would say otherwise. No, Gavin, it doesn't matter that I sometimes win and am getting used to just not peeking. I'm tired of fighting for my life when I just want to chill.

Am I gonna have to throw a bunch of games to tank whatever MMR I actually have so this can stop? Or just never play QP again?

I just want normal games, Gavin. I don't ask for much.

So, I return to this post with egg on my face. I must apologize to Gavin. This entire time I was under the impression that I was not capable of consistently playing above Plat and expressed frustration that I was being thrown against people whom I was fairly disadvantaged against. So to achieve a so-called break, people suggested I play comp instead where the MM is more likely to make lobbies of narrow pools. And indeed, things were more chill. I felt more at ease. I felt like I wasn't struggling to survive. This is all I wanted.

Well, I sleptwalk through my my placements and a single game and achieved Diamond 5, the first time in my entire Overwatch career that I've ever touched the rank.

..... So Gavin, you win again. I admit it. I was wrong. You had far more faith in me than I ever had in myself. I understand now....

But I'm still pissed at you for a few of those Tracers though. Like what the actual fuck?

Assuming they’re playing the same role as you (as mentioned under ‘role delta’ in the recent matchmaking post), then the odds are that your Quickplay MMR in that role is actually higher than your Comp MMR. Conversely, these players could have a lower MMR in that role for QP than they do for Comp.

It could also be that these players are grouped up with a Plat-MMR friend who’s playing the same role as you - in other words you’re being set up as the ‘rival’ to their lower-ranked friend, not the high Diamond / low Masters players.

Finally, matchmaking is also looser in QP. You wouldn’t be pitched against a player of that rank in Comp, but if you’re playing an unpopular role (e.g. Tank), queueing during off-peak hours, and/or playing in a lower-population server region like Oceania, then the odds of you getting ‘perfect’ matchmaking go down.

I've been consistently checking the profiles lately just to make sure I'm not losing my mind, and it's usually the DPS and Supports that are higher ranked. I'm a Support player, so if it's the first possibility that's the issue, then I'll just say I'm a bit surprised that my QP MMR is that high. Like, I've watched my replays. I'm thinking "ain't no way." 🤣

The simple answer is because QP MMR is looser than Comp MMR, as well as not being the same as Comp MMR. If you play Quickplay a lot, but not very much Comp, your QP MMR will change far more than your Comp MMR does, so yes, it's very possible that your QP MMR is higher than your Comp MMR

I dealt with exactly this earlier last year, where I was mid-plat to low-diamond in Comp, but was being placed against high-diamond and Masters+ players in Quickplay. It's really what pushed me to trying comp a bit more, and after playing it here and there (Especially with Drives), I ended up being in very similar Comp lobbies to the ones I was being put in in Quickplay. My QP MMR genuinely did reflect my supposed skill level because I played so much of it, it just felt wrong because I had not played Comp enough yet to know if that was actually accurate, and it was generally just the mental battle (and also looser matchmaking) making it feel like a nightmare where I was matched with people way higher than me, when I wasn't

(Also, directing this towards Gavin specifically as if he's the god of matchmaking is really funny, sorry)

I may have to play comp then, if not to satisfy my curiosity to see if I'm actually Diamond than to get chiller games because let me tell you, it is wild to walk out of spawn and get my face eaten by Tracer.

If you want to play sweaty sometimes and chill on others it kind of doesn't matter which one you do it on, you just need to be consistent.

I don't play to throw (unless a teammate is a bigot, in which case we're all going down.) But my level of "trying," from my myopic perspective, has never been anything special from a skill standing. So it's taken me off guard that my QP games have gotten this ridiculous.

For one, I don't do it after a match; I do it during set-up to have an expectation on what I'm getting into. It takes like ten seconds. Yet another assumption you're making.

It stinks and Valve is a rotten company that refuses to deal with anything. I noticed this happening pretty much as soon as the game's Steam store page went up last year.

I want to buy it and I probably will end up doing so on Steam, but I sure wish there was a different platform I could support the devs with.
