I been together with my GF for 3 years and I love her. When I moved in with her into a studio apartment, the plan was to help her save money by going half on the bills. 3 months in see quit her job. Now she deals with a lot mental health issues like anxiety and depression. She hasn't been working for over a year and she is just waiting on NYS to give her disability which they denied already so she re-submitted I make good money 74K a year but in NYC that's not enough to take care of 2 people. I told her today that in the long run I can't do this by myself. Which was the nicest way to say eventually you need to get a full-time job. Her reply is I can only focus on applying for disability. We don't have kids and I understand her mental health but I'm not getting any reinsurance. I can't do this for another year and it feels like she doesn't care at all. A part feels like just packing my shit and living with my mom back in my room that's bigger than this apartment but you don't leave someone you love when they are going through it. To me it's worries me when I ask do you ever plan on going back to work full time and you can't give me a straight answer.

It can work for Supplemental Security Income depending on what angle Melody goes for but it's going to be very hard to prove especially when they have to go to a social security appointed shrink when it goes to the medical check phase. That's why I do not think they are going for SSDI. If they are going for disability then it's a very, very high chance of it being rejected.

Mental illnesses are accepted as a disability if they interfere with the person's daily life, and you can apply for SSI or SSDI for it.

It's challenging to be approved on it alone, but I did spend a lot of time reading this site for info on how to apply for it. I'm applying for it for my 3rd time to SSI. In the past, I've spoken to a lawyer who took my case in front of the judge based on Depression/Anxiety in the USA. The entire process took 3+ years from the start. People are often denied 2-3x from what I read on other sites, it's normal, sadly.

Hello!  My name is Dice, and I have been directly affected by my parent's hoarding.


Here is a scary picture of my former living room.  It is indeed hard to find the couch and coffee table.  ...This is also an older image too, so it's worse now. 🙃  I won't show the corners of cobwebs, random food filth, tar-yellow patches from years of heavy smoking, or layers of dust that's caked onto everything (ironically even the cleaning products).

My mum is the hoarder (my dad the enabler) and I'll just do a small checklist of everything "about this".
► You know it's hoarding if there's "paths" to places, one clear path to get to another part of the room or house.
► My mum keeps buying stuff.  She buys stuff she already owns, but will buy more.  She used to get health food delivered, $500 a box, some of it still waiting on the porch (some of it already expired!).
► Parts of the house can't be used.  There's a room full of clothes and the door is hard to open because it's packed in there.  There's desks and tables with too much stuff on it to function as a desk or table (the chairs got their own piles too).
► She has mobility issues due to an injury, and still won't clean even if it's to make her own life easier.
► Years ago I threw out a stack of decades-old magazines....She was livid, and since then when she can't find something she'll call and ask me if I "threw it out" or stole it behind her back.
► My mum would go through my garbage to ensure I didn't throw out anything "valuable" (it never is).
► Lies: New things she'd buy were "just replacements" or " a sale" or "stuff on backorder". We were always waiting on that "garage sale" that never happened. Or all the stuff she's "saving for me".
► No appeal ever works.  We've been nice, we've offered to do everything, we've been curt, we've made ""threats"" to call a crisis center to help her (to which she's proudly refused and rebuffed)
► She's generally hostile when we DO clean.

Unfortunately hoarding is still not that well understood, no "clean cut" solutions really exist and is often wholly contingent on the hoarder themselves wanting to get better.  Fortunately many cleaning services are understanding and sympathetic for when it finally comes to that time (some do it for cheap as a matter of charity; but some won't go if, say, there's a problem with certain pests like bed bugs).  Garbage bin drop-off services tend to respond to hoarder clean-outs often enough though; indeed a lot of people get affected by this.

All that said; severe hoarding is a mental illness (full stop). and I don't especially "blame her" here because it's a problem bigger than her and her power to fight it ("the stuff" is a greater force than "the family" fighting this).  It's shameful but a lot more people suffer from this than you realize (whether directly or second hand).  I found this little posted nugget about it:

It's the same with mental illness. It is not rational. It cannot be reasoned with. It is, at times, more powerful than love.
I understand you want concrete answers, but they don't really exist. Even having the answers "my hoarding is due to childhood trauma" doesn't unlock a solution (if only it did!)

The Hoarder subreddit is fortunately a fine-enough resource for those with the issue themselves.  But since I'm on the other end of the problem, I use the Children of Hoarder subreddit to find others like me who have been emotionally distressed by my family's hoard (because if you're like me, you might need to hear that you are not alone! 👍). That said, obviously it would be better to work with real professionals and therapists, but Reddit's there for now. Perhaps one of the more depressing revelations and solutions from CoH above is often just to "move out" because trying to fix it is.... just too much, especially at severe levels.
There's too much hope, too much begging, and just too much to fix in general (specifically if the hoarder isn't reciprocating the effort).

But yeah, when I finally moved out, I experienced clean countertops for the first time in my life.
I finally got to smell that nice sweet scent of a home. 😌

I take this topic seriously, because like many mental illnesses it's still not well understood, whether by the public or folks who aren't directly dealing with it.  And not to be too presumptuous, but some discussions about it come off as quaint "there's a bad mess I gotta clean (and do)" than what serious hoarding might entail (i.e. a severe mental/physical health hazard).  But there are levels of it too:
