When the former CDC director sided with Kennedy (and a bunch of highly regarded scientists and doctors too) I looked into what his position actually is. And it's far different from being an anti-vaxxer. He was around that crowd during COVID because those were the people willing to listen.

Overall Kennedy isn't anti-vaccine, he just thinks that those making them should not also be the ones who regulate them. He also thinks people should be able to make informed decisions about taking any medical treatment. Who wouldn't want the safety of vaccines researched? At worst the outcome is better vaccines. 

A lot of research is funded by pharmaceutical companies and there is a lot of conflict of interest when it comes to approving medical treatments.
We also know from all the COVID emails that dissenting opinions were not welcomed.

Blood clots are on the rise, heart problems are on the rise, cancers are on the rise, overall people get sick younger again even though the trend was reversing. There is certainly a good argument to figure out what is going on and Bobby Kennedy is actually one of the few people who could get that ball rolling with the help of the scientific community.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to discuss this, so please point me in the right direction if it's not. But the decision to not only close that thread but to ban all future threads on the topic seems like a pretty heavy one to make.

I'm sure that the nature of that thread, combined with how the majority of Americans are reacting to the murder, is making it a topic that needs to be moderated more than usual. There were certainly posts that went too far. (For example, there is a difference between proclaiming your lack or care for the CEO's death or saying that you understand why it happened and implying that it's time for more CEOs to die.)

However, this is the literal biggest news story in the country and will continue to be a huge story throughout 2025 and throughout the eventual trial. Banning all discussion on one of the biggest news stories of the next year is a pretty major decision and not one I can think of happening in the past and I think sets a pretty dangerous precedent.

That thread, and future ones, can easily be moderated by taking action against users (like the one who got three months for using the shooting in an inflammatory manner in an unrelated thread), deploying temporary locks, and by utilizing official staff messaging that can be present on every page.

As ZeoVGM said above, this story is going to be a major topic every time there's new news on it, and it's an odd decision to decide that the entire site is going to bury its head in the sand as a reaction. Honestly you're just going to end up playing whack-a-mole every time a new thread pops up, but unlike AI or Crypto, there's no megathread to redirect people.

Pretty fucking absurd to ban talk of the biggest news story right now. I've read more "extreme" views all over literally every other platform out there right now.

This is a garbage decision by staff and y'all don't seem to communicate well with one another, let alone the community.

It's weird that this is seemingly a "staff viewpoint" or whatever knowing that there are multiple staff members that agree with the shooter's actions.

It sounds like this is a decision based on profitability and advertisement-friendly content rather than one based on actual moderation practices.

I'll just cut to the chase: it's been glaringly obvious that some members of the moderation/administration team are simply too tired/too burnt out/etc to continue doing their duties.
Between the inconsistent application of the rules (which are vague enough already), the heavy handed decisions, the cynical interpretation of posters' words, the lack of communication, the conflicting messaging, and the refusal to listen and communicate with the community...

It's time for a number of staff to hang their hats.
Whether it's been too grueling or you've simply lost interest, honestly the reason is between you and yourselves, but quite frankly, insisting to continue running this site when it's clearly a task you despise is not only unfair to the users in its selfishness, but is damaging to yourself.

We're long past the need for change in here.

But instead, I'm sure, what we'll get is silence in this thread, and a bunch of threadbans.

Again, like I said in my big post, if there's new news feel free to make a new thread. We even have a TRB banner ready for when that happens. For some reason I feel like literally everyone is glossing over the fact I said that.

I also want to note that part of the problem is that people are starting to "joke" about assassinations like this one in other contexts. We literally had someone joke about assassinating a federal judge, something that is generally taken pretty seriously by law enforcement given they are already an assassination risk. What do people think happens when that sort of joking makes it's way over to gaming side or other less serious topics? Seriously, it's bad for everyone.
