Wait, hold on - is this article even accurate? What I see in the actual rules linked (in the article) is that trans women are fully permitted to play in women's evens once FIDE (the governing body) confirms their transition. The 2 year period is the maximum FIDE is allowed to take to make that verification, which is supposed to occur at "the earliest possible time."

My immediate reaction is that that is silly and not worth the effort to police unless it happens a lot, but it's very very different from the article's framing.

I think the author just misread the FIDE rules? I could also be off base, as I'm doing ~3 minutes of research at work as my due diligence here.

The part that drives me crazy is that the games are absolutely choked through with filler to justify the "full length RPG" claim. It's really frustrating that they clearly do not have anywhere close to enough story to make a whole trilogy out of VII so it's just filler and dumb fanfic nonsense designed to make the games meet an arbitrary "30-40 hours, therefore real RPG" playtime.

I don’t think western media in general has earned any goodwill that warrants a charitable interpretation of their intentions.
