I would say I don't know what it is, but I actually do. High school sucked and every single video game seems to gloss over that fact. I don't care about Social Links, I don't care if Brad is dating Jennifer but cheating on her with Tom and I don't care about gym class or cafeteria food or whatever goofy nonsense joke trope that's pulled out next. And I especially don't care for the math test coming up and if I don't click the right answer I'm locked out of some stupid ending. I still have dreams that I didn't study for biology and I'm gonna fail.

Recently I've been playing resident evil 4 remake, which contains side missions such as "pest control".

Literally all you do is find little rats that are running around squeaking in corridors and then you kill them and collect a reward.

The same game rewards you with cash for shooting crows that are doing absolutely nothing.

Is anyone else sick fed up of this approach to animal life in games? It's one thing if I'm playing Zelda and I'm cooking a boar for meat, which is framed less as killing-for-fun and more for necessity, but it's another if I'm supposed to just find murdering a rat fun just because it's there and killable.

I know it's just a game but I feel like it's a symptom of our ongoing lack of respect for animal life in the real world.

What is it with these replies and trying to downplay the level of discomfort I feel over something because I still did it?

It's not like I put my controller down at the end of The Last of Us and walked out the room. We are capable of finding things deeply unsettling and still doing them.

In the case of killing animals it's that I'd greatly prefer games to stop incentivizing me to do it. and personally feel it would make our culture healthier if we moved away from this kind of game design.

We've had those threads and I've participated in them.

I just expected more people to maybe make the plausible assumption that I *also* have problems with the dominance of human-on-human violence as a reward mechanism in gaming, rather than jump to dunking on me with the assumption that I only care about animals because I made a thread motivated by that concern.

It has the energy* of when my partner's aunt comments on her save the whales posts with "well what about the babies being aborted?"

Anyway I've requested this thread be closed because it seems we're a long away from discussing this topic in a civil way if I can't even do it here.

I guess for posterity I'll indicate my opinion is that extermination should be an absolute last resort and regulated around the world. Priority list should be:

-relocation
-humane euthanasia

This issue in particular, of violence against animals in videogames, has historically been well ridden with posters shitposting or otherwise dropping off with the least thought through posts you can think of. It's not a conversation that can really happen, mostly because it's riddled with low quality posts that are little more than trolling or reacting aggressively to the conversation.

It's a bit of an eye opener for me because I would've expected these kind of responses more on that other forum, but I thought we were better at not being as knee-jerk dismissive as this thread has been.
