Hey, does this sound familiar?

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why SSMB is not the best that it could be.

We have stuff going on under our radar constantly either in PMs (which only administrators can force their way into, but why would they when they don’t ever suspect anything wrong and thus aren’t going to invade people’s privacy all willy-nilly?) or off-site that gets passive-aggressively dragged onto the forums.

Despite us having to beg people to send in reports so we can stop abuse and strike and ban people accordingly, people still do not tell us anything. People do not tell us names. People do not report things in a timely manner and wait for things to pass or get deleted. Instead of being proactive in helping us maintain the forum, which we do pretty well when people actually do send in reports, people decide to get “informants” who actually prove time and time again that they do not have accurate information- either by saying stuff that directly contradicts our member logs and the administrative control panel’s logging, or by us simply using Google Analytics to see no one has breached any sensitive info- and thus they’re actually more like gossipers, shit-stirrers, and outright liars. And when something has gone down behind our backs, and evidence disappears, and feelings still linger, and people are still angry and upset and hurt, everyone suddenly wants to ask “Well, why didn’t the mods do anything about it?!” and why we “harbor” shitty people.

The fact is, we can only do as much as we can within the board rules, our code of conduct, and with the proof we have on hand.

We all knew something had gone down with someone, but without proof that it was even on site our hands were tied. We do not and will not ban people for simply saying dumb stuff outside of SSMB. Then people start talking about it on Tumblr, saying it was within the sites grounds, so we get a report with a quoted PM that was so insulting and prejudiced in its language that everyone who read it was appalled and advocating banning on the spot. It thankfully took one staff member to dig through the text more closely and notice the lack of context for the whole argument (which, at the very least, would’ve allowed us to question if more people were involved), and so we constantly dig and analyze- looking for more evidence of something- and eventually it culminates in the revelation that the system had literally not logged a PM conversation with the two parties in forever, if at all. And yes, it logs deleted conversations too. We tested it between ourselves.

So either someone is a liar and had it out for Diogenes, Diogenes is just such a genius that he managed to fool the whole system, or maybe he actually did say it but- indeed- it was off site anyway so it doesn’t matter for the previously stated reasons. Staff cannot possibly know the real truth now, and thus we fairly cannot do a thing about it! Because instead of any of the aggrieved parties coming to us ASAP so we could see everything for ourselves and make a proper ruling and get this over with when it happened and was fresh, we were basically given nothing which could justify Diogenes staying banned. So the end result of all of this dumbness was that someone got targeted and banned for no reason, the people who have been upset about this for all this time will continue to remain upset and still think we are harboring bad people purposefully, and now staff has far less trust in the parties that were apparently harmed in this whole venture for telling us something that wasn’t fully true, to the point that we’re just kind done. Nobody wins. And that’s a shame.

If you want to make SSMB a better place? Then I beg you once again: report abusive behavior immediately.

I think I like a lot of things, but when I think of "fandom," I tend to wander into media and hobbies which I've put a significant amount of investment into in terms of money and the community. So in that case, I only have two.

First, I love Sonic The Hedgehog; ever since he debuted in '91, I've stuck by him through thick and thin, playing the games, acquiring tapes and DVDs of the shows, watching the anime before it premiered in the US (subs forever), collecting merch, and making a foothold in the community. My second other biggest fandom is Furry. I enjoy animals, and I love the artistic freedom the culture exemplifies. There are no limits to how you can express yourself as a Furry, and I personally choose to do so through creating art and fursuiting, which the kids just adore. Can't forget the conventions; it's a great way to meet interesting people and see some awesome art and dance talent!

Oh wait, here's a weird one: seiyuu! That's the Japanese term for "voice actor." While I love learning about the talent in the English voice acting world through articles and interviews, the Japanese voice acting world is different in how comparatively famous they are within their own country. Idol culture permeates, so lots of voice actors there do things like stage and live-action work, as well as photo shoots for magazines and huge events where they sing, dance and do live-readings. You come for the glitz and glamour and stay for the derpiness. All Japanese voice actors act amusingly like children. All of them.

Now that Satoru has died maybe Nintendo can finally catch up with other gaming companies when it comes to their representation of women which, frankly, is really poor.

I’m not glad he’s dead, but I’m glad he’s gone.

Ignoring the fact that as a woman myself*, I felt Nintendo was far better at catering to my personal belonging than the likes of Sony and Microsoft, as well as that there is no context you presented to discuss what Iwata personally thought of feminism, it’s in excessively poor taste to politicize this man’s death in this manner because it sets a precedent of not allowing any human being the dignity they deserve on account of holding unconscious biases largely out of their control. Iwata may not have been a perfect feminist, if one at all, but you yourself are not a perfect feminist or ally. Does this mean it would be right to subject the ones closest to you to messages of passiveness and celebration that a Feminazi or imperfect ally made the world a better place upon your death? Of course not. (It is also disingenuous to try and give yourself an out, because the fact is the only reason this man left is because he died, meaning you are indeed implicitly happy that he died. You can't have your cake and eat it too.)

The fact is Iwata was more than a single perceived political viewpoint. He was a human being whose life mission was the betterment of video games as a medium, game developers as artists, and gamers and their families as friends. He took massive pay cuts to stave off the firing of others below him. He proceeded to recode games he wasn't even assigned on just to make sure they came out on time or could be bigger and better. He only had amazing things to say about his friends, and nothing bad to say about his competitors and critics. He was willing to profusely apologize when something went wrong. And ultimately he presented himself as a person who valued fun for everyone above all else, not just for the sake of those who watched the Directs but for the sake of himself as a self-described gamer at heart. Subsequently, the games he worked on are not just some of my favorites; they have literally provided real moments of bonding within my family, from me and my brother cooperating and competing in Pokemon Gold/Silver and Pokemon Stadium, to the renewed interest in gaming my arthritic mom and her sisters and brothers- my wonderful aunts and uncles who may not have ever embraced gaming- had for a moment with Wii Sports. That cannot and will not be taken away by his falliblity as a human being.

Furthermore, the beauty inherent in all of this is that it IS inclusive. Fun for everyone means fun for women like me too. Even if the word “feminist” never came out if that man’s mouth his actions showed that he just cared about people, men and women, in the context of working for his art. From one feminist to another, your posts are profoundly disgusting, both for the movement and towards Iwata, and your apology for “offending others” rings hollow and meaningless. In his memory, I wish no ill upon you. Instead I hope you understand why what you said is problematic, to understand his impact far proceeds video game characters, and embrace his message of fun.

* I would rather my message not be ignored on the basis of this statement being unproven, so here I am. I'm not just a woman, but black too, meaning my SJW credit is pretty high

You do the minimum that you need to do under the understanding that you are contributing meaningful work to society, and then you are not only free but encouraged to pursue your interests and talents through free and cheap access to education, workshops, and grassroots organizations and groups, knowing that the more human beings we allow to pursue and develop their strengths, the likelier we increase our discovery of new breakthroughs in our lives, whether socially or technologically.

Your amenities and shops are not miles and miles away necessitating an expensive-ass car that needs expensive-ass gas or for you to stop every so often to charge it up again. If you're far out or taking a long trip, then you've got robust public options to get to where you need to go.

You've got family, friends, and neighbors who actually give a damn about you for you, who see about you, and who make sure you're alright. Indeed, your first option before going to buy something should be asking if your friend or neighbor can help you out, and they likely will knowing you'll return the favor. "Cup of sugar politics" as I call it.

The streets and parks are actually alive with art (real fucking art, not this AI trash), music, dancing, food and other cultural footnotes. Kids are drawing with chalk. Folks are skating up and down the road. Some musicians have met up to jam. People are hanging out talking about their lives and dating healthily.

You don't worry about crime really all that much. Not only are people's needs largely being met, but we have communal ways and deterrents to prevent assholes from taking advantage without having to sic jack-booted racists on them.

I want to live in a country whose politics focus less on property and consumption and more on people and socializing. I want a country where I can easily find friends, or someone to talk to, or a cool boyfriend. I want to be able to walk down to the park and see a festival going on and be obliged to join in. I want to sit on the porch during the evening and chat it up with my neighbors.

I want to have a fucking life on a planet whose ecosystems aren't dying to fill the holes in our hearts and spirits with video games and phones.
