Calling it strange why for some people having to play as the male MC would spoil the game, or not be able to relate to them. Everyone has different priorities, there isn't any need to come and question why not having a female MC option might be a strong dealbreaker to some.

Why would I ask questions if I was being dismissive? I was stating my opinion, you don't have to like it. Throughout this thread I have described my own experiences playing this game. There was no such thing as FemMC when I played this game. If you're going to paint me as a bad guy, you're going to have to try harder. Everyone else who disagreed w/ me stated their points just fine. What makes you think you're the exception just because you're offended? For the record, across multiple posts which you have claim to read, I also said I understand the disappointment being shown. You're just reaching and trying to start something. I'm not a kid and I wasn't born yesterday.

Even as someone who primarily just lurks all over the place, I spend a pretty decent chunk of my overall time on the internet reading posts on Era. It's been building up for a long time now but I've pretty much gotten to the point where I hate this place. You know why, I don't need to say anything, the timing of this post is not a coincidence. This thread is one of the only places I generally still enjoy reading. As a whole though, it's getting worse by the week and certain recent events in particular have pushed me to the point where I just want out of this hellhole now. It's just straight up unhealthy for me to be here at this point.

The problem is that I'm basically a borderline boomer when it comes to having grown up with certain internet formats. I'm still here because this is a big forum at a time dominated by Reddit and Discord, basically. There are plenty of specialized sources I engage in regularly but I simply haven't found any other large general forum or otherwise similar format where I'd want to even just browse. I wouldn't even know where to begin looking for an alternative. And if I just…quit coming here, I frankly wouldn't have any real access to generalized information. I just simply wouldn't know anything about things like the latest game announcements, (decent accounts of) recent political events, or any number of other things that I don't have an explicit specialized source for.

So, I dunno, where else do you all go? Like, if you were banned tomorrow, what would be your alternative to Era? There has to be something general out there in the enormity of the fucking internet that isn't Reddit. =x

There isn’t anywhere else. The Internet sucks now — full stop. Era isn’t remotely a fun place, and its vibe oscillates between hostile and insufferable, but Google Ads, SEO optimization, and AI-generated clickbait content make everything else worse.

I have a few Discords, and that’s about it. I miss the days of instant messaging people and making friends.

We’re supposedly more connected than ever before, but I feel vastly more isolated online than I did 10 years ago. I imagine others do too. Which, you know, has political implications.

The unfortunate reality is that if you carry any of the discourse from this thread which makes it so great to off-topic or gaming (anti-trust), you will face disingenuous attacks and a complete lack of charity with the interpretation of your post. It is almost always better to avoid commenting in political threads if it is not something that can be clearly defined as pro-mainstream Democratic Party or clearly anti-Republican.

Every once in a while certain posters pop up in here and I get nervous.

I mostly just stay out of OT for pretty much reason TheHunter got perma, you don't ever know when your gonna catch stray even if its innocuous post. RIP man tho, so many great posters here just gone.

I think almost everyone is bound to cross a line periodically. The system is structured to punish repeat offenders more severely. But as the website gets older, fewer and fewer of the long-time members can say they've never been actioned. Then the system is rewarding medium-aged accounts (that aren't juniors but also probably aren't mainstays of a given community) and pseudo-lurkers like me who just don't post often, or about certain topics, enough to get in trouble.

The site, or at least some communities, just become a revolving door where the oldest members are gradually filtered out and replaced by younger accounts that honestly aren't better contributors than those who are booted, they just haven't been permabanned yet. Or maybe not replaced at all as there are some communities that have totally died -- nearly including this community which is hanging by a thread.

I'm not saying senior members should be granted some kind of immunity, but there has to be a way to apply a slightly lighter touch that punishes bad behavior without dismantling communities. I think more compartmentalization would help -- using thread bans more in some cases, and maybe even extending that idea to subforum bans. Like maybe you could permaban someone from EtcetEra but not from gaming or hangouts. Or as a different example, if someone in gaming is getting into trouble for console war stuff too often, they could be banned from gaming but not from EtcetEra.

But honestly it feels like it's already too late.

Real shitty stuff.

My general rule of thumb is to bail out whenever one of the admins starts poking people. Wish ignore actually was an option there.
