Well with Digimon talk happening because of the announcement of the new game, might as well post this, been having a lot of thoughts about my favourite creatures and animals, been helping to cope with the current political climate and has brought back so much nostalgia.



As such, here are my favourite 20 Digimon and why they are the perfect level of great (Yes I will be using the Japanese names and levels because they sound better and unlike Pokemon, Digimon is NOT consistent with the naming).



20. Anomalocarimon



Love Anomalocaris and Sea Scorpions as a kid so when I saw this Digimon on TV in the 00s I was giddy (no matter how much the dubbers tried to lie, seriously was it really that hard for dubbers to allow kids to learn new things back then? We really had to suppress everything, even something like learning about Anomalocaris and Sea Scorpions/Eurypterids?). Perfect design. Yeah a great Digimon for the 20th spot (:



19. Sorcerimon



Wizarmon's icy cousin. An odd choice but it's because this guy become one of my big mains when playing Digimon Cyber Sleuth for a big part of my playthrough (honestly one of the big issues with that game is that it feels you get less fun variety once you reach the Ultimates). A detail that they and Wizarmon have that I don't see referenced much is how their trousers are clearly alive, with clear zip mouths and fabric eyes, such a fun detail (:



18. Atlur Kabuterimon (Blue)



Many anime fans maybe wondering why the blue one over the classic red (despite the Blue one actually being the OG)? Few things. Firstly I think the blue works better, making the red parts look like exposed muscle (helped with the skeleton), making them look way more gruesome and fun, really invoking the Xenomorph inspirations nearly all the early Digimon invertebrates had (I wish they hadn't dropped that... And made all the bug robots in later years).



Also because this guy kind of ender up being my main in Digimon World: Next Order run, I kept getting them a lot so I kind of grew to love them.



17. Fantomon:



Digimon's own radioactive grim reaper. Just a fun look overall and was a childhood favourite, mostly thanks to the anime (and the dub giving them a Boris Karloff impression). Not much to say here, good Digimon!



16. Kiwimon:



Another one of the long forgotten Digimon that I love. They have a simplistic hey wonderful design, Love the long skull beak, I love the long cassowary inspired feet, the green leafy hair, their brief appearance in the anime... But what really sells them is their attack:



Yep just firing their kids there (maybe, I don't think these little dudes are actually offical Digimon, I don't think their in the reference book).



15. Toropiamon



They are a Banana tree flowering winged Dinosaur-like Dragon/Snake lizard... I just need you to all to be able to realize what we're all looking at here... Because it's so bonkers yet works so damn well in part because it's so bonkers, I love this guy, their one of my favourite modern Digimon once they (FINALLY!!!) went back to making monsterous Digimon again and not just all humans in weird clothing. Like this design could be so easily cluttered, yet it works amazingly!



14. Archnemon:



I fully admit I had a big crush on them when I first watched the 02 anime as a kid. A detail I kind of love that hardly anyone ever seems to note is that Archnemon's bottom half has a full set of 8 eyes, like the bottom half is it's own Digimon and the top is poking out of a hole they've made, like their a parasite. Or the bottom half is like a shell the rest of the body goes into like a shell. I also love their hair.



13. Peti Meramon:



Look at them! LOOK AT THAT FACE!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! THERE SO CUTE!!!!!!! THOSE BIG LOVABLE EYES!!! I JUST WANT TO HUG THEM AND BOOP THEIR SNOOT!!!!!!!



Honestly give them a second pair of legs and alter the mouth slightly and they'd the perfect sheep Pokemon or Digimon!!!! Who wouldn't love a fire sheep! God it's fucking cute!!!!



12. Black Tailmon (and Black Tailmon Uver):



Why the Black Tailmon and not the og white one? Well simply, I love black cats, I have two right now as well as two who have sadly passed away. Plus I think the purple and black really suits the design more and I love the cheeky expression on the art.



And then you get the Uver version... Who thought up the idea that a Black Tailmon's data got messed up when absorbing a delivery service data so it becomes a Digital Uber driver was... I don't know, but I love it. I just love the randomess of it and I think the design is utterly adorable. Remember to tip your Black Tailmon Uver drivers ERA!



11. Marin Devimon:



While I love their usual adult form more (see #9), I just love this goofy and scary guy (and the fact they were giant in the 02 anime). I think what kills me is the diving gear strapped to their chest that they clearly don't need but have anyway because it's so those fun details that I feel got lost midway through (that thankfully Digimon are getting back). I had their card as a kid, really loved that card.



10. Ranamon and Calamaramon:



Digimon has amazing squid Digimon and these two are no exceptions. Never actually watched the Digimon Frontier anime, either as a kid (thanks for that Jetix) or as adult, I should really do that at some point but I think the look great and Calamaramon the perfect blend of sea-cool, ferocity and cuteness that I think make sea invertibrates so great in real life (:



9. Gesomon:



I've seen so many people just dismiss this Digimon out of hand as "Just" a giant squid... Like do people just not notice their actually a giant aquatic Demon/Xenomorph head with tentacles? I love the eyeless look, I love the false teeth on the top, I love the tubing on them, the small hint to what's to come. Just a classic Digimon for me.



8. Shellmon and Marin Bullmon:



If you caught my recent favourite animals thread, you will know I love sea slugs and sea invertebrates in general and I also love Dinosaurs so Shellmon was already up my ally and it's a massive shame that they get so little love from everyone. I was so damn excited to learn last year they finally gave this long forgotten Digimon their offical perfect level evolution and Love how gloopy they are, I love the anemone taped onto their back, the poison arm tubes and... Is that a timer stitched into their chest? A Pacemaker? Huh?



Anyway, love these guys and I wish they got way more attention.



7. Bancho Lilimon



If Lilimon evolved into a rebellious freedom fighter against the oppressive fascist militaristic regime of the D-Brigade. the Bancho in general are a fun concept but Lilimon is my fav, I lokve the red cape, the Togamon yo-yo, the longer versions of OG Lilimon's vine hair, her black head bulb and the purple wings (how does she fly though?) Really hope they get a chance to appear in animation and really hope they are playable in the upcoming story game.



6. Palmon



This, the last entry and my number #1 entry should give it away that Mimi was my favourite of the original anime Chosen Children. I love plant monsters in general and I find Palmon a really fun design, though I actually think the artwork looks better than the anime version. I love the fully black eyes, bigger emphasis on the teeth, the brownish colouring on the root legs the shade of purple on the poisonous claws. This creature screams cute but dangerous. That isn't to say the anime version isn't great in her own right, I always liked their dub voice and their kindness.



5. Metal Greymon (The True OG Virus not the anime Vaccine orange pretender)



After the Agumon fanboys screaming at for that line's absence, you're probably wondering why this guy of all of Greymons (the OG one the the very first Virtual Pet)? Well it comes down to how I was introduced to them which was this:



I also think the just look better to the "healthier" vaccine version introduced later in the anime. The blue (or purple in World) just works way better with the cyborgnetics and makes them look more gnarly and monstrous, Plus I love the Butterfly wing look, just something really weird but works so damn well. I have so much nostalgia training my arse off trying to get a Mega Greymon in the original World that I have so much nostlagia for them.



4. Lady Devimon and Lilithmon



Okay, time to embarrass myself because yeah, I can't defend the sexualization and objectification they been put through, especially during the late 00s to mid 10s (god those collector's card art is cringy as fuck). But... I've said in the past that I have a thing for super villainesses and both of them (with LadyDev often treated as the pre-evo for Lilithmom) really do hit a lot of those buttons. I helps I think their also amazing and cool in their own right, I love Lady Devimon's elongated clawed hand and Lilithmon's golden claw hand that looks like it's poisonous and the tips and I love the purple on Lilithmon. But yeah... A do feel a bit ashamed to have them at number 4.



3. Meramon:



This might seem like a very odd choice for the bronze medal and very out of place given the Digimon around them and you're right, Digimon original hero (in the original Virtual Pet, they were the heroic Vaccine to Devimon's evil Virus) is kind of out of place. They reasons why their so high is because I have a massive soft spot for them because of Digimon World. For whatever reason, I would always get Meramon a disproportioned amount of the time to the point it felt like I played most of the game with Meramon. I kind grew a bond with them because of that. I done really dirty in their anime appearances, especially Tamer.



2. Mega Seadramon:



This sea monster is the coolest Digimon to me, from that nasty like knife horn, their floofy under belly (that zig-zag design in the above art is meant to be layers of fur):



I love how ferocious they look, they look like an apex predator to me, something sailor would tell under deck and prey they never see. I love this Digimon as a kid and remember the episode when they debuted in the fog in the anime... Tod bad Metal Seadramon, their Ultimate form is such a disappointment. This and the rest of the Seadramon line deserves so much better.



1. Lilimon:



My favourite Digimon of all time, even as a kid watching her introduction episode in the anime when it first aired in the UK on Fox Kids. I love their colour scheme, those long red thorn nails that sadly have just seem to have been forgotten about, her leaf wings, the fact her arms transform into a giant flower cannon, her alien looking eyes, her pointy teeth making it clear she's a carnivore her thorn hair etc etc. I love this Digimon and she's one of my single favourite fiction creature designs... Ever.



Yeah I can gush about her all day... And actually have... To the announce of the people around me...



Also fun fact, I one tried to roleplay as a Lilimon for D&D... It sadly didn't work out.
