So many magazines/websites around the turn of the century were essentially men’s lifestyle mags and this kind of creepy frat humor was completely par for the course. Doesn’t make it right, of course, it actually makes it extremely frustrating to read and reflect on how little reviewers talked about games in favor of being cumbrained weirdos. I was looking for a reviews of the Ultimate Muscle gamecube game and I found one in Maxim that took a detour to talk about how a character looked as ugly as Anna Nicole Smith.

Sites like Kotaku and more focused hobbyist spots like Eurogamer or 1Up were really what changed the way people wrote about games.

Reading this was rough from a self-reflection piece because I was 100% one of these people. I've reflected on this a lot over the years, but something about the language used in the article mirroring a lot of what I used to say for shock value really hit hard. A good chunk of my online persona in the late 90's to mid '00's was making jokes like this. I even wore shirts with profane jokes on this subject matter. Definitely not something I'm proud of, and I question how I ever got a date being that type of guy.
I can only imagine the amount of folks I hurt without even knowing it by making jokes like this. Folks that had been groomed, harassed, assaulted, etc. who just sat back and went along with the jokes because of the era.
