Those of us who are against all this shit are supposed to be the reasonable ones. We shouldn't need a ridiculous aside of "not you guys, of course, you're awesome" every time someone says "Americans have lost their fucking minds", or something.

Maybe some people need one of those little browser extensions that just adds it for them automatically. Every post calling out America for being a violent imperialist hellhole just gets "not you, though, you're cool and you deserve a high-five" tacked on.

Like, there's something to be said for the temperature getting too high, and I get the impulse to defend oneself. It's natural. But it's virtually indistinguishable from the "not all men!" and "not all cops!" defenses. Everyone knows there are decent individuals under those umbrellas.

The point is that at a collective, institutional level, the group being referred to is broken. If the shoe doesn't fit when someone calls out those groups, you don't have to desperately try putting it on and then protest that it's too tight. Keep your head down and keep putting in whatever good work you can to change the group from within, and thereby the perception.
