Columbo not has a slower pace, but it also reveals the antagonist immediately. This show remains effective without a "mystery box" ending.

Somebody once described Columbo as a "How they did it" detective show, not a "Whodunit"

I almost feel like that's what's so refreshing, these days NOTHING is sufficiently explained, or you think about their explanation afterwards and think wait a minute that's bullshit in context with this other thing

everything is wishy washy vibes based and you're just supposed to take the movie at its word even if something doesn't make any sense, "wait the broccoli-head man from Captain Falcon America could've left his cell at any time and just didn't, because he's so big-brained that staying imprisoned somehow suited his plans better? fucking what?"

columbo is about rejecting things that don't make sense until only one thing does, the thing that you already saw happen, it's about satisfying resolution

but to be fair it has some spectacularly bad failures along the way too, plenty of times when with the final "evidence" you're like...yeah there's no way this guy is getting found guilty over this

So many modern TV and films don't have plots, they have incredibly improbable series of coincidences that just happen to always lead to the next improbable coincidence. The characters can't even react to or have thoughts about them because it's irrelevant to what will happen next.

I think the most perfect example is Star Trek Discovery season 2 where the end of the season forgets the setup of the entire season and provides an "explanation" that would be literally impossible for what was depicted at the start of the season except they somehow forgot what this was. Then in the middle of the finale they forget their own explanation and none of the characters realize they no longer have to do something but they go through with doing it anyway. They have to do it because the writers can only think of one way to "solve" their "explanation" that never needed to exist. Almost all of NuTrek is written like this back to the Abrams films.

And as Uncle noted the "big reveals" that are always supposed to explain what were a series of coincidences only draw your attention to it and make everyone involved look like idiots. The number of villain plots that involve them setting up an endless series of coincidences that would lead nowhere if someone acts differently just once instead of just shooting somebody is incredible. Somehow people think this is "smart" when it's the opposite.

Soooo, apparently a cyclone is going to hit my city on Thursday. It's very rare that a cyclone will cross land this far south and the last one was in 1974.

I guess I better clear my gutters and drains and strap down everything outside.

I mean, it's likely only a category 2 storm, so should be fine, but it's slightly concerning that my shit might get a little fucked up.

like just the scale of what's accomplished in that time, what you see, where you go

quiet, meandering, slow-paced, very limited in terms of locations, wouldn't blame anyone for calling it a waste of time, they do in fact waste a lot of time, though in some situations you can see how it's someone's idea of artistry or letting a scene breathe

but it's just crazy how different it feels, it's like an entirely different medium

even though I enjoy it, it's like I feel a little pressure myself, "holy shit this is so slow and limited, I could be accomplishing so much and seeing so much more happen if I watched a newer film"

but I don't let that get to me

if I was going to recommend any episode of Columbo to anyone who had never seen it, it would be Suitable for Framing, which can be watched here, it might not be the best episode of all time (though it's up there) but it is the most quintessential of all the traits of the cat and mouse game, the way Columbo irritates the murderer to no end and drives them to desperation, and actually might have the best reveal at the end

Not quite the same, but the USA network (does it even exist anymore?) has an array of shows during the 2000s they dubbed blue sky programs. Basically, you can tune into any episode of any show. You’ll get a complete story. It’s meant to be fun and snappy. Monk, White Collar, Psyche, Burn Notice, etc.

For some reason or another they stopped. But when Suits showed up on Netflix, it blew up. Audiences are into all that.

It’s also amusing how the Detective Conan anime is essentially Columbo for children and it’s been running since 1996. They’re gonna hit 1200 episodes, without accounting for movies and spin offs.

So far we've exchanged gifs, I think she is kind of shy  Doge

Well I did what I did last time, hit her with the 'ask me anything you can't possibly offend me' and asked about her dog to see if she opens up.

If this doesn't work. Maybe I should ask the next one if she wants cozy light, witty dark or flirty red mode. So I know if I should apply a soft touch, hit her with some witty sarcasm or compliment her tits right out of the gate. Overall I'm willing to compromise a little on the face or weight if they have a decent rack.

And it worked we're talking about her dog now

Good convo. My red obsession is a party trick that always works. She just realized half her walls are blue and her dog has a blue pillow and her mug is blue.  lol

Let's look at the Gacha roll that liked me.

32F, Editor in chief for the websites and socials of a radio channel. Basically lives/works in a town where all the Dutch media is about an hour away from me.
Likes movies, nature, photography and some other laid back activities. A pisces like me, but more down to earth. Definitely an introvert.

She thinks I'm compassionate and was surprised I'm actually funny and sarcastic.
A little unsure if I was actually serious or not until she mentioned her dog was scared of new people and I suggested that he should create a Bumble account.
"Haha I can't believe this you really are this funny"

She's in it for the long haul though. Wants to build something blah blah blah.
Quote:"Well, let's have a good time and who knows we might lose track of time"

"So you're one of 'those guys' that's just looking for fun?"

"Hopefully it'll last as long as possible and we don't need the app anymore"

[Image: 200w.gif?cid=6c09b952xowj0x0hxxaurboombq...w.gif&ct=g]

"Smooth right"

"Seriously Nintex, I can't believe how fast you pulled that off"

Anyway good night for now. Dropped my number and told her I'm open to grab a drink on Friday or Saturday and she can send me gifs and playlists.
Would be nice if we can hang out at my beach town on Saturday. She'll probably want to bring her dog and thankfully the frequent dune walks have made me 3% less clueless about how to handle dogs.

Again someone I wasn't 100% sure about turns out to be more interesting than expected. Now I must remain vigilant that I don't turn this whole thing into another puzzle box before we have a drink but she was excited I'm a Nolan fan (it's in my bio) and hit me with my weakness "So if I wear something red on our date, you'll instantly fall in love with me?" and said "Enjoy your red dreams Wink" when she went to bed. Seems like a decent catch overall but it's hard to tell how good she actually looks from her pictures. At this point her personality has appealed to me more.

Me and 32F are going on a date next weekend.
I was hoping this weekend but alas.

She picked Amsterdam because it was close to her town. No big mysteries this time. Although she was excited I'm into Hans Zimmer.

Gave her an opening to spice up the chat a little and she took the opportunity so she's no prude.

Anyway I'll keep some low key comms open before our date and then we'll see.

Now do I let the dog loose and respond to that 24 y/o Trumps

Yep I've decided to respond to her tommorow, some boring meetings so It'll be fun times at work.

I'm also going to try a new angle. The Dark Nintex vibe that my Tinder profile has.

24F/36M "long term relationship" is possible but I highly doubt that's what she is after.
She's actually kind of cute too in her pictures. Not thai thai but wasian.

Cyclone due to hit on Friday morning GMT+10. Going to pass right over the top of the third biggest city in Australia.

Maniacs have stripped the shops of food and toilet paper. It's COVID lunacy all over again.

If things go bad and we lose power and water, it will be a couple of days before things are up and running again FFS.

I spoke to someone who works at a hardware store yesterday and they have sold so many generators. He said it's going to be hell when they all start coming back for returns.

Idiots.

Just get yourself out there on some dates my man.

At this point you have a longer term relationship with Trump than any of these app women.

Are you sticking around for the chaos or making an escape?

I lived in Florida for a short while and when people would ride out hurricanes sometimes they would throw hurricane parties. Is there some bogan word for a cyclone party?

Sticking around. Not really anywhere to "escape" to and our homes are built to cyclone proof standards (up to cat 3).

This is a pretty regular occurrence further north in my state, but it's not very common where I live (last time was 1974), so people are getting a little panicky. Current guidance says it will hit Friday afternoon and may have strengthened into a cat 3 by then.

Not really any bogan word for cyclone. Not sure why because bogans tend to come up with abbreviations for things they are afraid of...

Edit: Apparently Ice Cube is staying at the Gold Coast and will be joining us for the storm!

Inviting the 32F to talk about music was a good move. She has something to chat about and unlike last time it will leave the important stuff for our date.
She does try the usual internet question lists, "What is your biggest turn-off?" but then I mention something music related and she's distracted again.
I'm also dropping some other random things that I like, so hopefully she'll have enough material to be busy until our date in ~9 days.

Started the convo with the 24 y/o, she was feisty at first but after a few messages I broke down her defense pretty easily because I never took her troll bait "Shit you got me."
After that, well let's just say she has some serious self-esteem and loneliness issues. She wants to chat more tommorow and if she doesn't wave any big red flags I'll probably suggest Netflix and chill to uh, fix those issues.

I spent an hour trying to beat the final boss of vagrant story last night. I don't remember it being this hard. He just keeps running away from me like an asshole!! And when I do finally catch up to him my attacks barely damage him no matter the gem setup or weapon I use. I had zero trouble with any boss before this too. I must be doing something wrong.

24F send me a message at 8AM that she wanted to chat tonight but was busy during the day.
I said that was fine but now that I'm home she has ended the chat.

She is still in my list though and hasn't blocked or removed me, maybe she wants me to like her, playing a silly 'hard to get' game and if not I'll just add lonesome Asians with low self-esteem to my overall target list. I never quite realized how many more cards there are to play if you don't 'necessarily' lower your standards but simply expand your pool.
