I'm worrying about my family being bombed. I live pretty close to the US border - southern Ontario - which is directly in the crosshairs. I am having a very hard time pretending anything is normal right now. We're basically Crimea 2.0. I consider myself an ally to marginalized groups, but it's so far out oy my realm of worries at the moment.

The only reason people support this is because America hasn't fought a war on this continent in living memory.

The "enemy" is millions of insurgents that speak and look exactly like you and can hit your largest population centers by blending in.

Americans do not know war, that's something that happens on the news.

I'd also add that there's at least a portion of the populace that thinks that if something DOES happen on US soil, it would happen in the north when it's obvious the damage would happen to the heart first.

There's also another portion that just thinks the US Army will never lose and protect them forever because of a century of jingoism, which fails to account that even the biggest armies can be beat and that war is not something you "win" in a weekend and then be done with.

I'd also add there's a group that thinks because they live in Democrat aligned states or cities that Canada (or any other country in a similar situation) would never hit there, because obviously Democrats and their supporters have no blame in this situation.

America in general has a whole bunch of "oh, it's just THEM, not US" syndrome.

I'd also like to add that even if it doesn't feel like it, living in the world's most powerful superpower with the world's scariest army IS a privilege that you have to check when talking to people from other countries now. It may not feel like one, but it exists all the same.

We are not the same or in the same positions.

I'm not sure I'd go as far as to consider being a trans woman in America a privilege right now but it's certainly not an appropriate topic to lament those issues toward Canadians in.
