More a long running complaint than a biography, the autism part came in after about chapter 15 from memory.

Idk... The writing style is fun and engaging and all, but I quite missed the autistic part of most stories, if that makes sense? As an autistic woman myself I did not relate to most of the stories and I was hoping to, going in reading this book. Maybe that intention was not quite right.

This is an own voices nonfiction book about what one experience of autism looks like. It describes the experience of growing up in a community that didn’t understand why she behaved differently from others her age. It also describes what to me sounds like OCD symptoms, and ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), both of which are diagnoses commonly comorbid with ASD (not that I’m trying to diagnose, or saying that either of them are definite, it’s just what they come across as).

Several of her experiences remind me of things that also happened in my childhood, in terms of not fitting in with my peers, and being mocked and in all likelihood probably bullied, even if I didn’t recognise it at the time. I have always struggled with food, either because of its taste of them or its texture, so those passages felt familiar to me. Similarly with the anxiety over things that many wouldn’t even consider being worth worrying about.

I always wonder if people enjoy these memoirs who aren't autistic themselves, or reading them at the request of an autistic loved one.

Me, I always end up feeling like I'm reading about myself. Which is a bizarre feeling after a lifetime of being an extremely strange person who felt fundamentally different from everyone else in the world. I've discovered that even some of my highly individual quirks, that I didn't think it was at all possible anyone else had ever shared, are just...autism. Like:

"If I flushed the toilet and there were no adults around to guard me, I had to be fully in bed before the end of the flush or the toilet monster would crawl out and get me."

That's literally me. Even as a grown adult I sometimes find myself scurrying back to bed as fast as possible after flushing in the middle of the night. For me, it's a toilet ghost, not a toilet monster, but I suspect only an autistic person would care about that difference. I can wrap my head around why not being able to ride a bike is extremely common among autistic people, or the concerning number of us who are in research datasets as a neurotypical control (oops). But believing in something evil emerging from a flushing toilet? The world will likely end in fire before science is able to explain that one.

As much as I kind of miss the sense of being special that being a complete anomaly gave me, the comfort of solidarity is invaluable. Thanks to Sara Gibb and all the others who've told their stories. It's incredibly healing to feel seen.

VHS was interesting because I don't think I knew anybody who had more than 10 of them, with more common amount being maybe 5 or 6. They were expensive and took up a lot of space so you got real picky about what ones you had, so it mostly ended up being a few Disney films and a copy of Jurassic Park for the kids and then maybe each of the parents having their one favourite film ever. Anything beyond that was usually TV broadcasts of films recorded onto blank tapes.

It wasn't until DVD that owning a "film collection" became a common pursuit.

So I can buy that a small handful of films sold stupid amounts on VHS, because Jurassic Park and The Lion King were kinda the obligatory tapes that every family owned.

This derails it because Jubilant Duck's anecdote is so backwards people have to call it out. 

How odd. Over here in Norway everyone had lots of them. There were absolutely people who had huge vhs collections.

We were broke as fuck and we had probably 50 actual commercial VHSs and at least 100-200 blank VHS tapes with at least three movies or several TV shows or sports events on them.

My grandmother's VHS collection was top of the line. She had every Bond Film ever shot up until the 2nd Brosnan film. She had at least 100 Western Chapters, which were all double VHS. She had so many VHS tapes she had to buy these things to hang on the back of doors to hold them all. Couldn't go into a closet in her house without your pick of 50 or mor tapes.

1) The 25% tariff does NOT apply to auto parts under USMCA (so Canada & Mexico) until the Commerce Secretary figures out a process. (Good luck with that)
