Vance is clear about the reasons though. They want to be more competitive with China. For the US I've seen many arguments that it can work because it could be self sufficient.
Still you have to keep your customers happy too and for the US that means trading partners like Europe and well, they're not doing that so Europe buys more from China. There is also the challenge that this is a risky long term plan they need to carry out at record speed. Moving away from quarterly targets to long term growth. Plus all the staff required for new high tech factories. In China most of the factories are set-up with a joint effort of European and Chinese companies. I think they need to be more selective with industries. Microchips is a good idea but cars and such? I think they'll just end up with lots and containers full of stock with no destination. If the US produces twice as many cars, spoons, tables etc. the prices will drop but who will buy them? 
You can't simultaneously try to bring low skill manufacturing back and reduce immigration. You also can't bring in widespread tariffs and think your domestic industries are going to be more competitive.
They are fucking retards LARPing as geniuses. The biggest issue is gullible people are falling for it. US car manufacturing had been dead for years. No one wants American cars, even Americans. The short time that Tesla had first mover advantage is now over and consumers are becoming more price conscious as low cost competitors come into the market. Tesla needs to move into the luxury market or it will die. What exactly are these tariffs going to improve for US manufacturing? No market, however big, is self sustaining because your market isn't self-sufficient when it comes to raw materials. You need to import things and every one of those things is going to cost more for your own producers. We've all spent our adult lives in the US listening to conservatives act like nickels are manhole covers when it comes to paying taxes for others to benefit, yet now he's crying liberalism all along because their people aren't falling in line on tens to hundreds of billions of dollars in effective taxes being levied in order to prop up a small percentage of jobs.
