Nintendo Switch 2 Thread
Moving this over from the shitbin thread because it's an interesting discussion.

They're not wrong, half the reason Switch 2 is underwhelming is the dozens of Switch 2s already out there.
But they've really put themselves in a corner that if all they have is Mario Kart 9 and Metroid Prime 4 upscaled with mouse controls, folks will be like: "Wait, that's it?"
There has to be a new 3D Mario close to completion. It's been almost 8 years.
I also expect a sequel to Ring Fit now that they can sell a new ring because the new joycons won't fit in the old one. It won't be nearly as popular as the first one though.
I'm guessing Mario Kart and Metroid as launch games. Odyssey and Ring Fit sequels for the holidays. Maybe gamecube games on Nintento Online.

There has to be a 3D Mario at launch. Odyssey 2 has been rumoured for a while and 8 years is more than enough time considering Nintendo's first party output for the last few years has been remakes and low key titles.

MP4 will bring in the Nintentards who still think Nintendo is for the r/im14andthisisdeep crowd. It's not got the appeal of BotW, but it will get the hardcore enthused.

RingFit will surely tie in to the Alarmo thing.

Spoiler:  (click to show)
Watch Nintendo launch with ARMS 2 and Nintendoland 2 and big promises of games on the horizon.

Latest rumor is Galaxy 3 instead of Odyssey 2.

But the only things I've seen evidence for is stuff like a Fire Emblem game in Unreal Engine 5. I haven't seen any sign of a launch window line-up like the Switch had in the first 12 months.
In fact, as far as I know they cancelled a few games including a Platinum Games title.

I worry that it'll be a lot of games like Xenoblade Chronicles X and Breath of the Wild enhanced as Switch 2 releases and many games releasing on both systems leading to an Xbox Series S / X situation. Mainly because the more risky titles like Bayonetta, Astral Chain and Advance Wars weren't big hits and they released games like Tears of the Kingdom and Xenoblade 3 very late in the Switch lifespan.

Nintendo published output has been pretty consistent in quantity for the whole lifecycle.

This gen won't have as many remakes to pad out the schedule, but Super Mario Wonder in October 2023 was the last fully developed internal Nintendo EPD game. Before that was Tears of the Kingdom in May 2023, Splatoon 3 in September 2022 and Switch Sports in April 2022. You've got to go back to March 2020 then for the next major internally developed Nintendo game which was Animal Crossing.

You also have to factor in that third parties didn't really get on board with big game ports for quite a while after launch (Doom releasing in November 2017) and there will likely be an absolute shedload of PS4 and crossgen ports in the first 12 months.

I think they have their powder dry for a decent release schedule for at least the first two years.

Considering how crap Chinatown Wars sold back on DS, I imagine Rockstar has lost Nintendo's phone number.

1/3 of the games from your list won't have sequels on Switch 2 or will return but only as remasters Potato.
Don't forget that many of those games were ported over from Wii U, which will now be backwards compatible.

I think that because of the higher budgets the cut off number will be 2 million units.
So that means Metroid Dread makes the cut but no more Bayonetta and 1 Kirby game instead of 3.

Also for Smash Bros. I expect a 'deluxe' remaster with added DLC like Mario Kart 8 got and not a sequel.

Nintendo is expanding slowly but nothing indicates they have much bigger teams now.

I expect remaster patches to be trickled out through Nintendo Online for the fan favorites like the Xenoblade trilogy.

GameCube games, nice in theory but there aren't that many left that haven't been remastered on the 3rd party side or are frankly worth it on the Nintendo side.
I predict lots of games will release for Switch + Switch 2, like Pokemon Legends, Metroid Prime 4, Zelda Twilight Princess remaster and such for the next 2 years.

So overall I see the line-up from a 1st party perspective shaping up as:
50% cross-gen titles
25% remaster patches
25% exclusive Switch 2 releases

It’s Nintendo so I’m leaning toward “no lol” but PS5 often had free updates for PS4 games. Otherwise releasing this on Switch 1 around if not after the Switch 2 is…very Nintendo.

It's going to be cross gen for sure.

If I had to predict, Switch 1 games will all have Switch 2 upgrade options.

There was reference to "Switch 2 Edition" in some of the Direct stuff.

I'm actually going to watch this Switch 2 thing. Haven't watched any of these game events in quite some time.

Expecting some sort of Zelda remake/port.

Mario Kart World is like The Crew? Having an Outrun type mode is neat.

C button is just Nintendo Zoom? Not at all distracting to watch other people playing games at 5 fps taking up 20 percent of your screen.

1080p 120hz screen is nice. Using old Hdmi spec so limited to 4k60fps ouput.

You have to pay for the tutorial game lol

June 5 release

Switch 2 will have/support enhanced Switch 1 games. Lol you have to pay for the updates.

Metroid Prime 4 has mouse aiming as an option.  4K60fps or 1080p60fps on Switch 2.

Wheelchair Basketball is a killer app.

Tuned out for a bit but ports, gamecube emulation, hyrule warriors another one.

From Software making a legally distinct Bloodborne 2 called The Duskbloods

Lol Kirby Air Ride 2

New 3D Donkey Kong game with destructible environments like Red Faction Guerrilla.

...yet again I'm reminded why I stopped watching these

No god's currency price for America yet, but weirdly 50,000 yen for a Japan-only model and 70,000 yen for the international model. So, maybe $400 to $450? Japan also has a bundle with Mario Kart for 54,000 yen, whereas on its own Mario Kart is 9,000 yen.

nvm

$450 or $500 with Mario Kart bundled. Switch 2 games likely bumped to $70. Preorders on April 9th.

Silver lining! some games have free updates. Zelda Echos of Wisdom is listed. Maybe it'll at least get a stable 60fps. If I do end up buying this, at least I'll have that and Kirby 60fps.

...or I just emulate them like everybody else.

Who the fuck will pay for the tech demo lol
Nintendo is so weird sometimes.

Anyway, unless they unveil something amazing for the Holidays, looks like I'm not buying until 2026 at the earliest, when we might see a 100$ price drop depending on how things pan out. I doubt it's gonna be a Wii U situation, but I'm not seeing it flying off the shelves either with this lineup and all these paid upgrades.

Now that money is not really an issue anymore, I was sort of looking forward to buy a console day 1, but I could not justify it with the PS5, and once again with the Switch 2. Hmph

Mario Kart Burnout Paradise looks pretty neat.

Old HDMI standard and no OLED is stupid.

Not as stupid as the paid tour thing.

Pricing is AU$699 here and looks like games will be up to $120, which is still $5 cheaper than new release PS5 games but way more expensive than Switch 1 games.

Generally, most games will receive around a $10-$15 discount at most retailers (fuck you EB Games) at launch, so pricing is competitive.

Expensive, but not unreasonable compared to the competition.

I was considering selling my game collection recently. I've gotten into sailing, salsa dancing, mountain climbing and I realized that video games are stolen valor for men. They tap into the male psyche to get things we naturally crave: goals, leveling up, adventuring, learning skills, competition, risk. But it's not real risk. With video games getting more expensive I have even less incentive to keep dedicating them as a hobby. Still like them, but just don't play them with regularity. I still don't own a PS5 (I have an xbox series x though) and I'm not rushing to get one either. For Nintendo Switch 2, the sequel console to the system I bought for $300 to cost $450 to start out? Mario Kart World costs $90? Games may have jumped the shark. It might be time for a video game break again. I am not paying $80-90 for a game unless it's GTAVI.

DK looks incredible, though. I'll say that. But that $80? That's money that could go into buying a boat.

Weighing whether or not to get it. I’d only play Nintendo games on it and nothing at launch is there for me.

With PS5, I got more use from it as a PS4 Pro 2. Lots of late gen PS4 games I held off on. At the time I had Sony Game Pass and this was still pandemic lite. Plenty of free time to play games.

Probably better to hold off until new Zelda and 3D Mario.

I'm not waiting because, if Switch 1 is anything to go by, the price isn't dropping any time soon...and PS5 actually increased in price.

Maybe. There’s always the possibility of a more attractive bundle if Mario Kart isn’t your thing.

Mario Kart World looks cool, but if I’m honest with myself, that ship sailed ages ago. If I ever decide to start a family, who knows, they might finally make a Nintendo Kart by then.

I'm going to sell off a bunch of old games and get a Switch 2, maybe go all digital at this point. Co-worker of mine wants to start a retro game selling business as a side hustle so I can easily offload some stuff.

Sure rarity and all that but games are on Steam, Switch Online, remastered etc. what's the use of all the old physical games.

Thinking about it. I would’ve liked a cheaper console option. Last time I used my Switch in handheld mode was probably early pandemic times. For a change of scenery I played on my balcony. That was a couple hours in seven or eight years with it.

I used it in handheld a lot early on, but that was because I played Zelda on the bus on the way to work and in bed at night.

My kids love being able to use it handheld on the couch so they can have the PS on the TV and the Switch on the couch and play Rocket League/Fortnite together.

Having a TV only box would be a great option and I would be surprised if they don't explore that space at least in concept.

I understand when they first launched Switch really wanting to push the hybrid nature and not wanting to confuse the market after the disaster that was their communication around the Wii U, but when they put the Switch Lite out, I thought for sure it was going to follow given that they had proved the concept and people were willing to buy the handheld only Lite.

I don't think we will see any movement on hardware variations for the first two years at least though. They will be working to get console and controller colour variations out first and then a Lite version will be a lock given that the original has shipped 25+ million.
