Why would the powerful create a plan for autarky over global capitalism?

It wasn't red meat, they really cannot fathom that Trump actually truly believes in tariffs and ending free trade.

But real talk, is not secret he tries to strong arm everybody, including allies. That is an authoritarian red flag.

It's because "the art of the deal" is literally:
1. Make demand with threat to do something extreme.
2. Since demand will be rejected, do that thing.
3. They come begging to accept your original terms.

I'm not joking about this, Trump's concept of negotiation is the same as Era's: refuse to compromise until you get what you want.

The only reason Trump ever seems more reasonable than them is because he doesn't care about most topics so is willing to run with claiming victory and some mastery of a deal he and only he could pull off. Even if the deal was just what the deep state would have negotiated anyway.

The funniest part of this negotiation strategy is that nobody who thinks it's a good way to negotiate realizes how completely useless it is if someone just uses it against you or agrees to the broad principles then negotiates back the details. Era never deals with real people so they don't have to suffer this problem, but it's why Trump seems like a pussy who always backs down because ultimately what he wants is to claim that deal making. Most people don't have the composure to sit there and wait while Trump runs his mouth, look at Zelensky, who could have just shut up and walked away with the deal Trump had claimed before he'd never give. It sounded like this is what both Trudeau and your President did, just tell Trump on the phone whatever he wants to hear, then let the actual negotiators ignore it since Trump won't notice or care what the deal actually was unless someone brings it to his attention. "Yeah, yeah, we have one million troops to XXX YYY the giant enemy cartels, sure sure." Then you just include some line about "Mexico will increase enforcement against the cartels in compliance with Mexican and international law." Trump thinks he gets what he wants, while the pledge is meaningless. This is how everybody in NYC handled Trump for decades.

The biggest of companies can tank the tariffs while thier smaller competition goes out of business. Trump only cares about the biggest companies and richest people and they will come out of this richer most likely.

Wouldn't smaller competitors be more likely to have fewer global suppliers over local suppliers? Wouldn't the largest companies be more likely to be international conglomerates rather than vertically or horizontally integrated in a single country?

I think is mostly because many politicians here act just like him.  Ironically, I think Obrador actually ended liking him if only because both are opportunistic assholes that love saying stupid shit while getting “demonized” by mass media and the political elite. Obviously, before he got elected, he was insulting Trump or saying everyone was a coward for not confronting him.

Well, I mean, Trump didn't really get a lot of business deals, his business has been terrible. He's wasted all kinds of money on stupidity. BUT the Trump real estate empire was quite large when he started. A footprint like that matters in NYC but Trump was mostly devested of that power by everyone else treating him that way. That's why he spent this century selling his name to put on other people's stuff.

One problem for elected politicians is they all think short term, so it's hard for them to wait him out. Trudeau only could in terms of his just sticking to Canadian/Liberal policy, he's already gone. Zelenskyy obviously has more immediate pressing matters than even elections. Somebody like Putin or Kim has all the time in the world comparatively. That factor alone favors those strongmen in any negotiation with this strategy. That's what makes Trump's obsession with China so mockable. Xi can wait, could even just ignore him. This is literally part of common Chinese philosophy and historical heritage.
