469,- Euro is already steep for a Nintendo system.

I think Nintendo will have to drop the price quickly and faces another 3DS type situation shortly after launch.

The prices are wild.

Breath of the Wild - Switch 2 Edition - 74.99
MicroSD Card - 59.99
Mario Kart World - 89.99

Cheapest I've seen is Bravely Default at 39.99.

Switch is popular because it's fairly cheap. Switch 2 isn't.

I don't like they're keeping the specs secret again. If I'm buying a €500 console I want to know what's under the hood.

You guys need to understand that you're not the target market for the Switch...you're barely 10% of the target market for the PlayStation.

Nobody outside of super enthusiasts gives a shit about specs or assigns value to imaginary numbers like TFLOPS and ram and shit like that.

It's why Sony gets away with bullshit spec sheets that don't mean shit in real world application.

If Nintendo can get the kind of broad third party support they seem to have right now on an ongoing basis, and they put out a stream of good first party games, it will sell just as well as Switch 1.

My daughter is watching the Direct right now. She doesn't give a shit about specs at all. She's only interested in if the games look fun and she can play fucking Fortnite.

They've definitely got those locked down. She's excited about Mario Kart and other games already.

I've gotten into sailing, salsa dancing, mountain climbing and I realized that video games are stolen valor for men. They tap into the male psyche to get things we naturally crave: goals, leveling up, adventuring, learning skills, competition, risk. But it's not real risk. With video games getting more expensive I have even less incentive to keep dedicating them as a hobby. Still like them, but just don't play them with regularity. I still don't own a PS5 (I have an xbox series x though) and I'm not rushing to get one either. For Nintendo Switch 2, the sequel console to the system I bought for $300 to cost $450 to start out? Mario Kart World costs $90? Games may have jumped the shark. It might be time for a video game break again. I am not paying $80-90 for a game unless it's GTAVI.

DK looks incredible, though. I'll say that. But that $80? That's money that could go into buying a boat.

I dunno, I think the pricing is too high for an impulse gift buy. Especially in this economy.

Let's say you want to buy it for your daughter, that's a $500 Switch 2, $80 Mario Kart, $90 second set of controllers. That's a $700 investment for just Mario Kart and doesn't yet include the online subscription and camera. The full set will set you back $800.

And then Switch games you might've missed aren't $40 either, they're charging $75 for BOTW.

Part of why Nintendo is succesful is affordability. They've thrown that out of the window.
To me it signals they expect to sell less and have thus increased prices for folks that do buy it.

So I expect it'll sell out instantly at launch but then demand quickly softens or it'll be a 'premium' product next to the original Switch.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if part of ongoing third party support demands was an attemot to normalise a $90 price tag.
Especially with the new 'lend your digital copy' thing

Reading up on the hands on impressions. I missed it but it’s an LCD screen for that price? Are OLED that much pricier? Even cheap Android handhelds have OLEDs now.

But that's my point with the specs.

Does it have 8GB or 12GB of memory
Exactly what have they nickeled and dimed on. I've seen reports that it beats Steamdeck Docked but not in Handheld mode.

I'm not rushing to buy this thing until I know what I'm buying.

Who gives a shit about specs though?

Nintendo are living in a post-specs world.

I needed two questions answered:
  • Does it play Nintendo games?
  • Will it be able to handle a range of passable ports of current gen games?

Both questions answered emphatically.

Pretty easy decision honestly.

I probably would if I could on Amazon, then regret it and cancel the order.

Keep thinking how the game prices are killing it for me. I’ve yet to spend $70 much less $80 on a game (ignoring N64 heyday). And unlike other games that crash down to sub $30 and often $10 in a few months, Nintendo games hold value. In three year Donkey Kong Bazinga is still going to be full price.

Looking forward to this direct to see if it can justify the price jump

I wasn't going to buy it until my zoomer co-worker interrupted a meeting to point out that pre-orders were up. She is such an angel.

Opened my phone to read that Nintendo had said "fuck poor people" and I was like daymn they deserve a purchase. Snob

The all digital plan though, kind of depends on how big the games are storage wise and how expensive the additional storage is.

The specs are going to be shit just like every Nintendo console and handheld since the Nintendo 64. I’ll buy one of course because I bought every Nintendo console and handheld since the Nintendo 64. Not sure why I’d make an exception here.

I’ll still buy the physical copies because I’ve seen way too many instances where stuff gets yanked or fucked with.

Playing thru Xenoblade Chronicles X on switch and I'm at the point where I was when I ditched it on Wii U (around the time of a new continent). This game is fantastic. Having to manage fashion/battle equipment is a bit much when there's already so many characters you gotta deal with.

There’s a Switch 2 commercial on the train and it’s only dawning on me that it’s called “Switch 2”.

Learned yesterday that Nintendo is going to put in more effort to ensure the quality of the Switch 2 line-up. Not as many devs will be able to release whatever on the eshop like now.

One of my big regrets in life is playing through 80 hours of xenoblade x and giving up pretty much when I finally had an OP flying mech despite huge patches of tedium in between. I loved the game overall and I'd love to finish it but I can distinctly remember all the running around I had to do, especially in that fucking city.

Who is getting a switch 2? I am very excited

Apparently there's another direct coming soon. Either just before or just after launch.

In Canada they have some cool displays at malls and such but still a pretty small ad presence for a new console launch.

It almost feels like a soft launch.

I'll pick up my pre-order at launch

Part of me wonders if they're trying to lean into the extended cross-generation situation we saw in the PS5/XSeries launch? Keep em both on the shelves and make money in both directions.

It is definitely a softish launch. Ads have only started appearing the last week or two. Maybe they are having stock issues and want to avoid the drama that goes with that. I expect they will ramp up significantly by September/October.

Unless they have some research which suggests word of mouth is sufficient to carry this launch period...

They desperately want to knock the PS2 off the best-selling console throne. Not sure if they would sacrifice the launch of the SW2 to achieve that, but it is Nintendo...they are known for a series of idiotic decisions.

Standing at a crosswalk and see an ad for Mario Kart releasing on June 5. Wow. It’s actually this week? Maybe it’s me not having a preorder. But it does feel tepid.

Just got my message I can pick it up tommorow.

I think with this launch they're trying to do the Japanese salaryman vibe.
