Because “woman” does have a definition, as does “man”. And they are immutable. 

In this context, where ‘lived experience’ is taken as reality, Denver’s answer makes sense as in that’s what their answer would be. Problem is despite the old saying, perception is not reality. It can be belief, but not reality.

A few weeks back Carla Denyer was answering callers on LBC and some kind of 'what is a woman' question arose. Her answer wasn't bad, but the host (who is a Tory ex-Spad, because of course he is) pounced on her after which she was very much on the back foot. It is so rare to hear politicians handle such questions competently or confidently. For a long time it's felt like there is a playbook adhered to by anti-trans journalists that pro-trans politicians can't handle.

The trans movement, especially the experts on social media, regularly asserts that everyone actually agrees with their position on what a woman is and that TERFs/chuds/fascists/etc. are muddying the waters with this gotcha question and backwards coming up with justifications for their bigotry and hate. You see them doing the same regularly by claiming their belief that being a woman is just a feeling you have is the widely held feminist position and the position that women are different biologically from men is patriarchal propaganda tied to fascist movements.

As the saying goes, you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. Almost all trans support is this, "progressives" adopt the position simply because that's what good progressives do. "I'm pro-LGBT so I must support this." Don't ask questions, just consume product ideology.
