Hi, Era.

During the second season of Light & Magic (a very highly recommended documentary about ILM and the evolution of special effects in cinema), one of the interviewees talks about how the rise of CGI in film led to the loss of the sense of wonder — that capacity for surprise and amazement at how a certain stunt had been pulled off, how a certain makeup effect had been created, or how a particular location had been designed, just to name a few examples.

And this is nothing new — it's been taken to the extreme over the past 10–15 years. Not only is CGI increasingly dominant, but there are also more and more tools distancing productions from practical effects: deepfakes or digital touch-ups to age or de-age characters, the use of The Volume alongside omnipresent green screens, digital blood, wounds, and gunfire in many action movies, and so on.

The thing is, just yesterday I started Havoc, the latest film by Gareth Evans (the director of both The Raid movies, for example), and I found that the first five minutes feature a police chase after a truck where virtually every shot of the cars on the road is pure CGI — and the result looked much closer to a video game cutscene than to a real chase. Are even the main cars in big setpiece chases now going to be 90% CGI in their scenes? And worse, is it going to be obvious that they are?

On top of that, it's not just that what used to be 200 extras with fully detailed costumes on a real location or five real ships out at sea are now just pixels and polygons — it's that, as has been discussed often, the quality of CGI itself is becoming more and more questionable. With a few honorable exceptions, the norm nowadays is to see $200–300 million blockbusters where the CGI is painfully obvious. When it's not downright bad. This could easily be a thread of its own because the reasons are well known (mainly time and budget constraints) and some of the main culprits too (cough MCU cough), but the fact remains that you can count on one hand the number of annual blockbusters where the VFX work is fully satisfying. Obviously — and I don't want to open too many more side topics — the way the viewer's eye learns is a huge factor, but beyond that, even if you know that X or Y element is CGI, you can still appreciate and admire it when it's genuinely well done.

The bottom line is that it deeply saddens me to see how increasingly hard it is to find movies that surprise or amaze you with spectacular practical stunts, real makeup and prosthetics, incredible real-world locations, massive handmade sets, crowd scenes where everything feels tangible, or action scenes where explosions, gunfire effects, or blood are "real." And at the same time, it saddens me that the overuse of CGI often goes hand in hand with mediocre implementation across the board, making it hard to find achievements like the work done in the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, for instance.

At this point, I don't even necessarily want what I see to be 100% physical and "real" (cinema never truly has been); I just want it to look that way — not so obvious that the rubbery, unnatural-looking character moving on screen is fully computer-generated. There's more and more CGI on screen, and it's increasingly less polished, and that honestly saddens me.

And to end on a positive note, here are a few relatively recent movies that I think are excellent (or nearly so) in their mix of practical effects and CGI: Villeneuve's Dune films (really, most of Villeneuve's cinema), Top Gun: Maverick, McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible films, Better Man, Society of the Snow, Alien: Romulus (except for that absurd character), some Star Wars projects like Rogue One or Andor, and the new Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers films. I just wish these were closer to the norm rather than the exception.

Even the MCU can have a sense of wonder, in the right film. The first Guardians of the Galaxy blew me away with the "Chris Foss painting brought to life" aesthetic. It certainly had ropey moments and some CG shots that just didn't work well, but when it all came together it was genuinely gorgeous.

For fuck sake, CGI is not a problem, capitalism is. People on set are getting paid by an hour, CG vendors receive the flat wages. Studios are trying to move as much of the production to the post step because it gives them more control over the final product, and they can abuse the workforce to their hearts content.

If VFX workers were paid fairly and treated well, then we would have great CGI too. Great CGI have made for some iconic and landmark moments in cinema history.
