I don't think we can achieve succinctness in strategy without actually figuring out our demands first. Part of the issue you correctly point to is the nebulousness and relational context of political terms like "left," which is why I'm always saying I'm confused by people including people like me in the in-fighting because "in-fighting" implies that I am in the same political headspace as most of the people on Era. I'm not. And frankly I don't know why that delineation engenders resentment; my side is small. You'd do better to be honest and ignore my side than try to lie to me to say "we're all in this together."

Many people on the "left" want the continuance of capitalism but just want select minorities- namely queer folks and standard ethnic minorities lucky enough to be born in the West- to be beneficiaries of its upward flow of wealth and relative stability, but they never say that and instead just continue to engage in shallow idpol and contrarianism to Republicans as the baseline of their politics because aesthetics and culture war drivel are how we've been indoctrinated to engage in politics.

We've never actually had a true reckoning to define what system we want, what our relationship should be to a system, what are the basic principles that should be upheld, none of that. We've resigned ourselves to different flavors of capitalism and insist having a different flavor means it's not fundamentally the same dessert. Liberals just keep grabbing me by the shoulder and pulling me in for a group photo without my consent, and when I say "Yo, I'm not part of this family reunion," they get mad at me and keep saying I'm the one ruining the picture! Like I didn't ask to be included in the first place, but you keep talking about the left!

We should define terms! We should discuss and debate about meaning and context! We should increase our vocabulary! We should educate ourselves about the conditions of the world, past and present! We should literally seek to gain as much knowledge as possible instead of resting our laurels on vague assumptions and ill-defined beliefs and movements, because when you can define the problem then you can define the solution. It's why for example I always tell people to define "human nature" when they're resigning themselves to capitalist realism, to get them to actually think critically about why they are reflexively assuming that all humans actually think like capitalists and are thus assuming this system is all biologically-driven.

So before we even decide what the plan is, we need to decide not only what the problems are by how we individually align ourselves in the pursuit of solutions to those problems. You can't plan for a problem you don't know about. This vagueness and lack of clarity on what "leftism" is is part of the problem and is why liberals are always playing defense against Republican framing. They don't actually know what they believe, or they do but are scared to say it because their beliefs are shit and they don't want to engage in the work of deconstructing shitty beliefs to attain better ones.

I'm not going to engage in intellectual snobbery about clearly not having read anything by Locke, Voltaire, Kant, et al regarding the conceptual underpinnings and defining principles of liberalism, or that even just by cultural osmosis being fucking aware that said principles even exist, but I AM going to underline the point that not only are these principles generally well understood, they have actually been enumerated and codified in legal documents such as the UN Declaration Of Human Rights, or most relevantly THE FUCKING WRITTEN CONSTITUTION OF YOUR OWN FUCKING COUNTRY HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

Regarding "don't want to deconstruct those beliefs to attain better ones": I've said this before, Liberalism is about the only fucking ideology out there that literally accomodates and promotes inherent opposition in order to strenghen it; every other authoritarian assholes rule number one is "Talk shit about me or what I believe and get rekt", whereas the (misattributed to Voltaire) quote "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" fundamentally enshrines the point of muh freeze peach as a self-regulating principle

I often complain when people say these types of people get all their knowledge from Wikipedia when it's clear they don't even read the entries on there about the things they proclaim loudly about for years on end.

If all you read was Wikipedia you'd be vastly more informed and less ignorant than these people are. You don't have to follow the linked sources even if you probably should. (If only because Wikipedia is not entirely trustworthy but then I'd argue a non-ignorant person wouldn't treat any source as entirely trustworthy beyond all reproach.)

When I first heard about it I thought it was going to be an awful Rick and Morty clone in space.

I'm so glad I gave it a shot. It's hands down the best Trek has been in a long time, and it seems to understand what Trek is better than any of the other modern shows. It's funny, but still 100% has the same soul as the golden age shows.

i recommend the whole video, but he makes a point at the end that what attracts people to these characters is that the satire still dresses up the villain character (whether they're the protagonist or not) in cool outfits and gives them cool things to do. so maybe we need media out there that doesn't do that, and valorizes good people.

star trek lower decks is a great example of that. the show adheres strictly to an idea that the federation is a post-money democracy that works, and that people are really good at their jobs because they enjoy the work and genuinely want to improve things.

gonna segue into something else for a bit - lindsay ellis made a point years ago about something mel brooks was right about. real-life neofascist movements adopt the fascist visual elements in american history x, pink floyd's the wall, etc - but you know what they don't copy? the nazis' real-life hokey pageantry being made fun of in springtime for hitler.

star wars, especially under the disney brand, has been really bad about this. there's no reason, none at all, that there should have been a first order path on the star wars hotel. people shouldn't be excited to meet kylo ren. stormtroopers shouldn't be out and about in the park like they're the same as gaston or a cartoonishly evil queen.

No, it doesn't. Lower Decks depicts members of the military who do this. It also follows after DS9 in showing the rest of the galaxy as a more complex place and one where economics continues to work because scarcity continues to exist. Unlike the rest of NuTrek which adheres to species uniformity.

I love how the entire thesis is that the problem with The Joker and Homelander is that they look cool and do cool things. Except, they don't. One is literally a clown and the other is lame (in universe at that), and both do very uncool things. About the only cool thing they ever do is demonstrate the hypocrisy of others.

The actual problem is that people like bad guys. Or believe things that you may think are "bad" no matter how they're presented. And you're not going to get away from that by making every villain like those on Captain Planet or doing away with villainy completely. Especially because the more you lecture with anvils the less interested your targets will be in the media.
