I did not claim Germany was the US, my worry is that increased German military spending will end up benefiting Israel's campaign of genocide against Gaza. I sometimes see the 00s and the early 10s being the golden age for the internet, especially in comparison to nowadays' heavily algorithmic, highly corporate, AI dead Internet. Like I do thing in some regards that is true but on the other hand I've never truly agreed with this and it feels like it's only true if you were the right demographic.

Like 4chan, Something Awful and a lot of those boards were kind of awful if you weren't a straight white cis guy, where casual racism, a fuckton of ableism, homophobia, misogyny etc that would just go unchallenged and when it was it was mocked as no fun, downplayed as "just jokes" or being told it was actually good. Like it's hard not to notice just how common the R-Word was or mockery of autism or using autism as an insult was, like we criticize Twitter for this crap (and rightfully so) but it feels like those sites just added a speaker to what was already there. Like it's honestly just cringe looking back at just how immature and edgy a lot of it was and just how openly woman hating it was, like I feel like so much of modern gamergate comes from that culture.

And also and these reason thought about this (specifically I was spurred by Izzzyzzz recent video about 2000s Internet hoaxes), a lot of the humour of that day came from attacking teenagers and kids and that's honestly really fucked up. Like this was also a thing in the 90s with Jake Lloyd and Brittney Spears from attacking celebrity kids like Justin Bieber, Kristen Steward and Miley Cyrus, from wanting them to die or be brutalized or mocking them and their fans was so common. But beyond that, so much of felt like it was attacking teens and kids OCs, "mary sues" etc, especially attacks on women teens and kids (like let's be honest, it's hard no to notice how women dominated spaces like shapping, fanfics, OCs etc got the brunt of the mockery and hate). It's hard not to notice how so much of the Furry hate was based around homophobia. So much of the humour was just kicking down to make people feel better about themselves.

Like the sites may have changed, it's sadly become more and more mainstream, but a lot of the stuff back then never went away and in many cases has improved or their has been efforts to make things better, I feel their are way more safer spaces for women to talk, Furry have become more and more accepted, people are more aware about the toxicity of fandoms etc. I am NOT saying things are better, I'm NOT saying things can't improved or that enshitfication hasn't happened. I just don't see the 00s and the early 10s as some golden years that got tainted by corporate media. Stuff was bad and they made it worse.

Side note: Their is nothing wrong to write wish fulfilment fiction and especially support kids and teens doing so, it can be satisfying, mentally healthy and a great experience for kids, especially those who are suffering or lonely in real life to have a creative avenue, it's one of the reasons why I think the internet needs more safe spaces for kids and teens to express themselves.

She had what can only be described as a tragic life. Her 13 year old daughter died by suicide due to bullying. She had an autistic son that went through so much. It destroyed her husband but they stayed strong and together until the end. Just a few months ago my wife gifted her a necklace with her daughter's face in it. You could tell she never truly recovered from it but she was still a joy to be with

With a grandparent you expect it? They had a fulfilled life. Got to experience everything you could hope for. But it just felt like her story wasn't over and it was just completely and unexpectedly cut short due to an illness she didn't realize she had seven days ago (literally). Her bowels just died and they couldn't save her. Like, what? Didn't even know that happens.

I will miss our ten minute conversations we had every day. They weren't much but I'm introverted so to me they were the world. She was a good friend and a third parent to my kids.

I don't know. I'm just now realizing how different grief is when a death happens to someone who's story isn't finished. And it's very hard. If you can share any empathetic words of how you dealt with it I would appreciate it
