I mentioned in another thread that Morrigan was a childhood crush of mine; the fact that she was Scottish (and her hair is close to my favourite colour of Cyan) probably helped. As I've also mentioned before, her being a canon bisexual helps a lot in me liking her and I like that she's got a good story arc about responsibility and her accepting her role as the Queen of Makai/Hell. That being said, I don't like some of the flanderization she's suffered over the years that focuses on her solely being about sex; or the Udon or Teppen versions of her that just make her an outright villain; both I feel lose a lot of her fun and dorky nature, Morrigan isn't a hero, she's an anti-hero, but to me she's also the type of person gloating she's taking out newbs left or right in SF6's competitive mode and loves to party.

The problem is the amounts touted, which already represent an astronomical cost, don't come anything close to basic living wage. So it wouldn't replace benefits. You'd still need unemployment, disability, etc., and all the administrative stuff that comes with that.

The real world trials have indeed been pretty successful. It turns out giving 1500$ a month to 1000 people in a random town improves their life a little bit. None of those studies take into account what happens on the larger scale. Inflation? Housing? Government debt? The next president/prime minister campaigning on getting of rid of it, winning, and suddenly the infrastructure for all the other government programs not existing.

I'd be less skeptic if this supposedly magical and very popular solution had been tried once, anywhere.

I don't think the 'free money' kneejerk reaction is invalid. I don't really want a surgeon getting 15000-20000$ of public money.

I'm very much in agreement with removing the disincentives to work trap. But could it be accomplished with allowing people to stay on social security and work, until they get total revenues of let's say, 50 000$?

I mean, I can't really (and don't really want to) get into the nitty gritty of what gets shuffled into UBI, and what it entirely replaces, and how the math works out - this is very much contingent on existing tax revenues and expenditures, which is inherently a case by case basis for different administrations.

But to your specific point about a high earner getting free money from the government you think they shouldn't, that is easily refuted - someone earning $200k a year is paying more than $20k a year in taxes, so they're still not getting 'free money'.

The concept of UBI isn't just a wholesale reform of existing benefots structures, it inherently also has to be a wholesale reform of existing tax structures.
Whether thats an 'up front' payment you pay back later (UBI) or an 'on receipt of payment' tax break (NIT) is just a conceptual difference between a pay out or a rebate, the end result is the same.

With all else being equal, and the underlying principle being the concept of a government existing to serve and protect its citizens, I'd favour the 'upfront payment' (UBI) over 'end of pay cycle rebate' (NIT) system, if only because that stops people getting fucked on credit cards or whatever while they wait for their payment versus getting x amount at the start of the month and knowing thats what they have to live off.

There's obviously finer details that need working out - for example, immigration becomes a much bigger issue than it already is if your governments handing out 'free money' to everyone, or people who require dedicated carers probably not being able to subsist solely on a 'minimum wage' system - but thats why trials should run, as well as to expose any other unintended consequences.

But like I say, AFAIK, most of the trials that have been run have turned out to be fairly positive in results
