March 2024. Rumors are swirling that my favorite wrestler Mercedes Moné is set to debut for All Elite Wrestling in Boston. I am desperate to go to the show. Katy is very nervous about going back to an event that magnitude. She is unconvinced that I am ready for it. I have front row tickets in my shopping cart. We have the money. I know that her debut is going to be a once in a lifetime event.

And I cannot push the button to checkout, because I know that I cannot guarantee that I could enjoy it. I know that I cannot honestly tell Katy that I will be okay.

Days before the show, something happens online and I am warned by a good friend that I might be about to get doxed or worse. I lock down most of my social media. A friend has had photographs of their house posted online on a hate site and there’s good reason to think I might get targeted next. The hate site has previously doxed me, and now that I am openly trans, it feels like I’m more on their radar than ever before.

The details of this aren’t something I want to go into, and fortunately it turned out to be a false alarm.

Travel is something I’m falling in love with all over again. Meeting new people means meeting people that don’t already have built in expectations about me. There isn’t a preformed concept of ‘Ryan’ that the current one gets contrasted against. It’s freeing to know that whether someone likes me or not is solely based on who I am today.

Haircuts are a big deal here in trans circles, because a lot of how we perceive someone’s gender comes directly from a haircut. I remember people being all up in arms about Sinead O’Connor shaving her head, and long-haired men are definitely viewed differently by society even today.

If you see a person from behind, you’re probably going to lean hard on their haircut when making a guess on their gender. As with quite a few things in my non-binary brain, my ideal haircut is one that’d make such a guess a little trickier. Being confusing to people is one of my transition goals in fact.

The inspiration for my current hair is none other than Spider-Gwen herself, as seen in the Spider-Verse movies. Her asymmetrical hair do gives off punky gender non-conforming vibes, and I love the idea that from one side it leans feminine and on the other it leans masculine.

When I see yet another headline about the awful things trans people are facing, or when I see people on the TV lying about people like me, that can put me right down on the floor, emotionally speaking. It’s often a pretty hefty hit. It can spin me out of whatever mindset I’m in and leave me struggling to remember what I had been doing.

I can’t afford that happening to me at work, so I’ve had to take some steps to avoid news as much as possible when I’m at the office. I’ve had to disable news headlines in new tabs on my web browsers. I’ve had to turn off news alerts on my work PC. Even then, sometimes people leave the news on in the break room and when I go take a break I can still encounter stuff unexpectedly. Fortunately, I mostly visit the break room when I’m at a natural breakpoint in my duties, so I’ll at least have a few minutes to try and gather myself.

When I’d hug myself or hold onto a cushion, what was missing was personality. Story. While cuddle toys are only fabric and stuffing, we can imbue them with traits and stories that while imagined, somehow give them power. That life we put into them reflects back amplified.

Tegan can’t travel with me. She can’t stay overnight at a hospital with me. But Turlough can.

Turlough (they/them) is a mostly responsible fox, with only one weakness. Namely McDonald’s French fries. We’ve had to protect them from the knowledge that there is more than the one McDonald’s, and as far as they know, there is only one in Sagamore.

Turlough does their best teaching Ben how to be responsible. Turlough loves being up high and their favorite weekend was the time they got to go to NYC and stay in a fancy hotel overlooking central park. They got to see all the life and lights and people.

Turlough’s primary responsibility at home is running the night shift. When Tegan has important nighttime activities to take care of and can’t cuddle with me, Turlough tags in.

Turlough is excited to fly on a plane for the first time and see the west coast in a few days, and is very excited to go back to NYC next month. They’re hoping to see Wicked, but I’m not sure if foxes are allowed. If they are, Turlough will be there. It would be a little hypocritical of Wicked not to let animals in, given the story.

Taking care of your mental health is incredibly important. I’m going to use every tool I can to stay as happy and strong as possible through tough times like the ones I find myself in. Cuddle toys are an inexpensive, and safe, additional tool in the toolbox, that compliment the medicines, and surgery, and therapy, etc.

Sometimes, on a bad day, when I need to bring a friend with me if I have to go out by myself to do chores, people might give me a bit of a look. Truth be told, my mental health is far more important than whatever strangers make of Turlough and friends. I know they aren’t alive, but that doesn’t change that when I need a cuddle and Katy and Tegan aren’t around to give me one, that a cuddle from one of my stuffies still makes me feel better.

As a friend recently said of their cuddle toy, Woofie, stuffies are healthcare. They are always there for me and they always will be. They love all trans people. Because I take care of them and give them names and stories and life, my investment in them makes them matter. Makes them powerful.

Just come the fuck on, man, why are all these 30+ year old (plagiarize is 45 according to one of the blog entries) dudes exactly the same?  

And in case anyone is wondering because I've seen people discuss this before in the past, yes, on his blog he says he has had his penis removed somewhere around a year to a year and a half realizing he was trans and non-binary.
