I teach within humanities: AP World History. Our students use primary and secondary sources daily, they read and process those sources, and they analyze those sources for: historical contextualization, intended audience, purpose, point of view, etc. Their assessments are not about regurgitating meaningless facts, historical education hasn't been like that for 20 years or more. 

I specifically tell students on the first day I don't care about dates, who won that battle, who started that religion, etc. it really isn't important and it has nothing to do with the focus of our class.

dates? Ok sure, within reason (obviously if someone says the war of 1812 happened in 1776, that's an issue).

I think the unfortunate problem is that people do give a fuck. Way too much so in consideration of the tiny population we are talking about. The issue has consistently polled horribly, even with dem constituents in blue states, let alone other demographics and states. The polling is even worse with parents who have kids in school too from what I've seen. Kamala tried to side step it/ignore it and got blasted by commercials throughout the campaign about sports and "transgender prisoners!!". I don't think the party knows what to do with the issue at all at this point, there's no guiding message, and public opinion isn't really changing.

LEADERS can change people's minds on these things. Maybe if they educated themselves on the topic, and spoke rationally, they could either convince people that the whole thing is a nakedly political tactic to drag *everyone's* rights backwards, or highlight how absurd it is for the government to get into the business of dictating who is allowed to chase a ball around a middle school together.

Or you know, stop telling girls they aren't as good at sport as boys? That maybe?
