For me a lot of it is the fear that I would hurt somebody. If you spend large portions of your life being told that people like you are a risk to others, you internalize that yourself and naturally want to preemptively opt-out. It gives you the sense that you cannot trust yourself. Why take the risk that you might say or do something that would harm someone, intentionally or unintentionally, which would have the chance to not only harm them but could harm you as well?

I was too forward in my only brief relationship and noticed that in doing so I harmed my partner, even if they were in minuscule ways, and that makes me not want to bother trying again in case I do more or worse, whether out of sheer cluelessness or actual malice. Does it make me be a little sad? Maybe, but it's probably better for me to be a little sad than for someone else to be very sad.

The money thing is also a big factor since young men are generally seeing their wages grow slower than most other demographics while there is still some cultural expectation to foot much of the bill.

A dark thought I have sometimes is that women's standards have raised to a point of expecting equality and basic human decency and most men are just incapable of providing that. Like perhaps not due to socialization but as a sex.

The issue here is the line the university is taking doesn't track with groups like CAIR, Muslim professors, and professors of Islamic art. Like, we absolutely need to be sensitive to people faiths and beliefs, but part of educating people is also challenging those beliefs and broadening those horizons.

So, I'll also note, there's an OPed in the Journal of Higher Ed in which a Muslim professor takes offense to the university's choice here as according to her it flattens out Muslim beliefs and paints everyone of Islamic faith with a single brush. I won't link to the article simply because it features the painting itself as the image that goes along with it.

This university is completely out of step with mainstream, contemporary Islamic thought. Many Islamic organizations oppose the firing of this teacher. There's even an article from a Muslim professor that lays this all out.

...now, I won't link the article, because I don't want a fatwa declared on the admins of resetera, but the point remains: the university is making an unfair generalization about the modern adherents of Islam!
