I feel Vertical Slices shown for marketing purposes tend to misdirect fans of companies or IP. To this day people still think Prey 2 was coming along and Bethesda killed just

There is no point to put any economic rationale behind those layoffs and studio closure other then excessive greed, appeasing shareholders for quarterly reports.
This is proven time and time again.

Some users here would probably eagerly write those layoff emails if asked by Phil Spencer and given XBox sticker.

You guys complain (rightfully) about how many GAAS games Sony approved and has not delivered results, specially games that took years to develop and then failed as hell. No defending Microsoft mismanagement but cancelling games that are in development hell and have not delivered anything is not being greedy but being not retarded.

Games get cancelled all the time. Looking at PD in retrospect, especially now that someone in the know has stated much of what we saw wasn't actually real, and understanding why it was cancelled is not the same thing as hoping people lose their jobs over it. That's an unhelpful remark. Unless you can cite specific examples.

Ascribing rationale where it is none but just a pure greed is not only unhelpful but harmful in big scheme of things. (like so many reports of studios delivering beyond imagination and still being hit with layoffs i.e Insomaniac).

Compartmentalizing this whole situation to point out that "this one specific project" wasn't coming along so it makes economic sense. This is non-sense and brainrot.

I shouldn't be suprised I guess, that's fanboy brain at work: always compartmentalizing to ease off any discomfort in safety blanket of "ackchyually it make economic sense" when it is absolutely not what it is all about.

Shipping Redfall was way more harmful to Xbox and arkane than had they canceled the game.

Agree. Always made sense why companies would just get a CG company to do a trailer with assets, over having team members spend weeks crafting a trailer of scenarios that 80% chance wont even be in the final game. But the outcry from game fans about ‘bullshots' made a lot of companies reverse that. And have their teams wasting time.

If your team is not showing that all that money being pumped in is not leading to a good result, best to pull the plug now. Imagine a game is a mess and you have to pay millions for marketing lol

Concord was in development for 8 yrs only for Sony to pull the plug in less than 3 weeks. As they knew it was a lost cause. Same with a lot of these other GAAS games they had in development.

I would hope the fanboys understand that these companies are not charities, they are not your friends, they are cold corporate entities and exist to make returns and profits for their shareholders. If you’re in the C Suite then no matter what happens you’ll land on your feet with a nice bonuses everyone else is fucked if and when shit hits the fan.

I worked in the games industry for a few years and seeing how the sausage gets made was both engaging and horrifying. 

The turnaround on the games I worked on was around 3-4 years, but the amount of meetings, the reality of the budget we had to work with, and hardline on release date was sobering. Our game was small fry in terms of the other behemoths that my company was releasing but that allowed us to be a bit more swifter. But we were still under the cosh.

Looking ahead the industry is not a great place to be. A few months ago I took the jump and went into business for myself and my partner in a nice niche area that will not be polluted by AI or others looking to muscle in.

I still have friends desperately trying to get back into the games industry that shat them out unceremoniously. They thought I was crazy to just leave. But naw I’m not leaving my fate in the hands of some C Suite shitbags.

I won't post Jeff's $300K house unless people really demand it but I'm not sure Melody would easily fit in the rooms shown on Zillow. The Gundams, anime and stained electronics definitely wouldn't. I think organizing the community to purchase Rekieta's two houses would be the better option at this point rather than using housing that members already live in.

I actually just discussed this a bit in the Feedback thread, I'm planning on dumping them because they're broken and junk. Along with trying an actual mobile theme:

That got me to thinking, I think I will delete the other themes and clone the default one to make an actual dark theme or at least darker theme. I've messed with stuff enough by now that I can attempt that and it's a better idea than the one I had about slowly darkening the main one. I'll probably start by just changing the background to black and making colors darker and people can suggest tweaks to that.

I just took a look at the themes since it had been a while and I think I may add a mobile-specific theme that's become available from somebody since the "responsive" shit doesn't seem to actually ever work. One problem is that likes will not immediately be available on it but if people would be willing to try it just to see if it's any good then if they prefer it I can probably figure the likes out if turning them off and back on doesn't solve it.

It probably shouldn't effect anything on the default theme but if in a couple days you visit and everything's broken this will be the reason.

Game pass cancelled. Xbox Series X unhooked from TV. Been a Mac user for over a decade. Basically at 0 Microsoft now.

All that's left is to actually sell my Xbox Series X which I think I'll do. Just such a shame with all that legacy xbox video game library.

EDIT - I guess my true test is when a new Bethesda game like Fallout 5/Elder Scrolls 6 comes out, will I be able to hold steady and not buy it on PS/Nintendo/whatever else.

That was me with DOOM. I've been all in on DOOM since I was a kid. Skipping The Dark Age was hard but I did it. If at the end of the day you find it hard to resist, there's always the option of buying a used copy since Microsoft won't see any money from it.

The moderation here is no different than how cops operate. It doesn't really matter what's in the rules, they can twist any of the existing forum guidelines to fit a ban. Astro Bot’s a good but mechanically light platformer, Mario 3D World even with its limited movement still feels a lot better to control than Astro and the levels are more interesting to traverse. 
 
I’m surprised Astro Bot won as many awards as it did, it wasn’t even the best platformer released in 2024 (that was Shadow Generations).
